nvidia problem

  • Quote

Post by genfive » Thu Jan 05, 2006 5:26 pm

I just updated my system and it is now using kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r5. I have also re-built nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx. The gdm login screen looks fine; however, after I login, it would kick me out immediately. There appeared to be a few message boxes, but I got kicked out so quick couldn't make out anything.

BTW. when I was emerging nvidia-glx, it had a QA warning about not running well on certain execute stack. Once again, my eyes are too slow for the message. Could this be related?

Has anyone seen this problem? If so, any solutions? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have exactly the same symptoms. I've reverted back to 2.6.12

almost the exact same issue here - I get the messege "Failed to initialize the nvidia kernel module" even though the nvidia module was loaded earlier with no warnings that I could see in dmesg. Not sure whether to downgrade.....urgh.

Yeah,

I've done that.

run the script

start manually gdm. Same issue. Not working.

Of course as soon, I revert to 2.6.12, everything works perfectly. No need to run any scripts, all works as expected.

I don't know whether this is just a recent thing as I don't use it myself, but I'm pretty sure the framebuffer (from dmesg it looks like you're using that) is incompatible with the nvidia kernel module. I don't know if it works with the kernel's agp module instead.

Try rebuilding your kernel without framebuffer support and see how it goes.

Quite strange. Its working fine for me gentoo-2.6.14-r5 kernel, 8178 drivers, fancy framebuffer, Xorg 7.0 (worked on 6.8.99 too).

Have you tried the run package from the nvidia site aswell as the ebuild (both work for me). Framebuffer wise, as long as your using the vesa buffer and NOT the nvidia one, it shouldn't conflict.

Maybe the combination of the vesa framebuffer and/or xorg 7/6.8.99 is the key here.

I'd avoid running the nvidia driver binary installer though - it can be a nightmare to clean up from. Trust me, I've been there when it starts causing trouble. Stick to the ebuilds.

just emerged media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r1

This fixed my issue. No needs to use /etc/init.d/nvidia start or what so ever quick fixes. This works well.

I would encourage to upgrade to this version.
