Help with E17

I just got E17 working, but the documentation I'm reading isn't informative in the least bit. Can anyone tell me how I can:
-change backgrounds, or have the background viewer in the configuration option show my pictures
-have new programs that I emerge show up in my menu
-add new things to the menus
-where any configuration files are

the configs are in ~/.e/e/
use e17genmenu to add menu items, the format is binary now :/

The easy way is to grab desktop backgrounds from get-e.org and put them in ~/.e/e/backgrounds/

Is there no way for me to use normal picture files for backgrounds such as .jpg files? They don't show up in the bg selector, however the ones I downloaded do.

Although that may not exactly answer your question. You can take normal pictures and convert them for use by e17, but e17 doesn't directly use jpg or png formats for its backgrounds.

I followed the instructions in the link you gave me, but those instructions suck. I guess it's downloaded bg's only.

Hey, how am I supposed to add applications to the menu? e17genmenu doesn't pick up a single program, all but that "Bonobo Component....".

e17setroot -s /path/to/image will set an image as the wallpaper and put a .edj in ~/.e/e/backgrounds/.

To add items to the menu, you need to create a .eap for the program you want to run (alt+right click a the program and select 'create icon'), and add it to ~/.e/e/applications/favorites/.order -- as detailed here.

e17genmenu grabs stoof from /usr/share/applications/<foo>.desktop to make generic eaps and populate the .order files.

to add an application to the menu first make sure you have a working eap for the application in ~/.e/e/applications/all (you can test eaps to make sure they work with dr17's built in run comand exebuff accesable by pressing <alt>+<`> (not <alt>+<'>) the eaps are in the top half above were you type so just start typing the eap name and click on it once it shows up) then open ~/.e/e/applications/favorites/<foo>/.order with nano and list foo.eap and that will add it to your menu.

Can't do that, I can't compile ewl for some mysterious reason. I'll post the error message later when I can figure out how to copy it out of the eterm.

You should be able to highlite the text to copy in Eterm, and use middle to paste it.

Get a screenshot of the error.

And, to create apps, just go to /usr/share/enlightenment/data/other/icon_example. Edit the build.sh script, and replace the icon.png file with the icon you want for the new app. Then, cd into the the location of build.sh, run it, and you have an .eap. Place it in ~/.e/e/applications/all, then use entangle to place it into the menu.

Thanks, but not only is ecore installed but updating xine and gstreamer didn't work. I tried it before...

It doesn't matter if ecore is installed. _Every_ EFL lib _needs_ to be installed from the _same_ checkout time. It's CVS so yesterdays ecore might be broken with todays ewl. So go and update _everything_ from scratch. As for xine... you probably want 1.1.1 (xine-lib that is). And reading the topic I linked would tell you that (posting in it will get the attention of more E17 users).

BTW, try to use a correct building order...

On the topic of e17 menus, can anyone explain this?

I've got a load of .eapp files in $HOME/.e/e/applications/all
In $HOME/.e/e/applications/favorite, I have a .order file and .directory.eapp
However, nothing seems to want to convince anything to appear in the "favorite" menu, which persists upon saying "No Applications". Is there something I'm missing, or is e17 still not fully functional?

why not just use entangle to add entries?
