Hi everybody,
I'm in a big trouble with my ethernet card. I compiled Gentoo 2005.1-r1 from stage 1, compiled the modules for the old realtek, but, at the boot, the system doesn't start eth0.
The ifconfig command gives me only lo information, nothing about eth0; different when I in the bootable CD enviroment, there it recognize my card and the net goes well.
Please help me!

When booted from the liveCD, type

Code: Select all

# lsmod
This will list all of the modules that are loaded for your hardware. If you can figure out which is for your NIC, make sure it's enabled in the kernel config.

If the module doesn;t load at boot, add it to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.x

I'll do as you ask, but I should say that I've compiled the hardware modules for my ethernet adapter as built-in, not as modules.

Shouldn't really matter. This test will just make sure that the driver the liveCD is using is the same one you've built.

If it still doesn't work, try activating coldplug.

See my thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-28 ... ight-.html

Basically I had a weird issue with it only working as a module, and not compiled directly.

Should I compile againg the Kernel? Because I've built in the modules for realtek 8139. If I should do this, could you gently tell me which command I will have to use to uncompile the kernel? And where I will find the modules ne2k?

It looks like your card - shown as ne2k_pci is using 8390 module. My current kernel doesn't have that. Basically you want to go to /usr/src/linux and run make menuconfig.

This will be like when you first built your kernel. It's not that important to deselect the unused module, but you can do it. Look for that 8390 module and enable that. You could grep 8390 .config to look for the full name of it
