Dual CPU -> Single CPU System

  • Quote

Post by JetAce44 » Sun Dec 18, 2005 11:17 pm

I'm currently having an issue with my graphics card overheating due to the close proximity of the heatsink of I think CPU1, and I was figuring on parting out the system eventually. Would it be okay to remove the processor from the system, and still run a kernel and software that was built under the SMP system? Would I run into severe problems if I did so?

Why not get a nice big fan?

You can buy a fan at any computer-store. Or you can take the covers off the box.

I've done both, and its just the fact that the heatsink is about 1cm away from the back of the graphics card that doesnt help.

Overheating Ti4600 ? I just don't think that is it. Those cards run fairly cool usually.

I think you've got a hardware problem... and pulling CPUs (imho) ain't gonna fix it. A heat-sink works because it is a mass of metal, and it does not emit enough heat through the air to heat-up any nearby component, even 1cm away. Not enough, anyway, to make it fail. If a particular component is failing, replace that component.

Software is not the problem (an SMP kernel boots OK on a UP machine). Hardware can be. Some motherboards don't like it and won't boot unless the only CPU is in the correct socket, also some features may not work with only one CPU, ... Normally the manual of your motherboard should tell you what the potential problems are, and which socket to use for a single CPU if the board is sensitive to that.

A dual Athlon board should not be too problematic though (both CPUs are connected to a single chipset, so everything should still work). The problems I know of are mostly for dual Opteron boards, that are sometimes wired like this, with two chipsets, one on each CPU, so obviously a missing CPU in the wrong place can cause problems.

It won't radiate enough heat to cause problems unless it's already too hot to touch (and if it's that hot, you really need more airflow in the case). There are boards that have heatsinks much closer (look at this photo, one heatsink is nearly touching the red AGP-Pro slot).

Before pulling anything at least try running without overclocking anything. Overclocking is most likely the cause of your overheating.

I forgot to update my profile, its now a 6600GT which are known for overheating...

Everything is at stock speeds right now, I'm wondering if its actually my windows install that is foobared and is causing the glitches.

I did some testing under linux, and it runs fine and does not lock up. I get a little better performance under linux, too.

Is there any specific set of steps that I would have to take to re-install windows without it taking over the MBR?

I believe Windows always takes over the MBR. They seem to have a hard time accepting they aren't the only OS option out there!
Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script.

You can't. Simply re-install grub after it's all over; I always keep a copy of grub.conf just in case.
