Extra extra long compile...

I am currently compiling KDE for gentoo

Dumb as I am I don't think stuff trough and I just gave in following command on my fresh reinstalled gentoo

Code: Select all

emerge kde
Probably not a good idea, it has been compiling now for the last 14 hours and its still going on...
I can't imagine this always takes that long?

I have a Pentium 3 866mhz with about 245MB ram which should be enough for it!
But should I have emerged some different command? Am I installing too much?

kde is enormous. nuf said.

However - what you could have done is

Code: Select all

emerge -pvt kde
to get a list of kde packages and what USE flags they use, then turn some use flags on or off to maybe not compile some things you dont need.

I compiled it on a duron 900 once, it took forever. hang in there :P

or you could go with something smaller like xfce4
I am SPAM, hear me roar.

If you switch over to another virtual cosole (Ctrl+Alt+F[2-6]) and run the pretend command that PovMan mentioned:

Code: Select all

emerge kde -vp
It will show you all the dependencies that haven't finished emerging yet (shift-PgUp/PgDown to scroll). It's nothing all that detailed, but at least it'll give you some idea of where you stand. Unless they've replaced the default KDE install with the split e-builds, there will probably be 20(?)-ish packages that start with kde-base. These are all pretty huge, probably taking a few hours to install each.

I remember I did the very same thing when installing Gentoo on my 850Mhz test laptop for the first time. Let the whole thing just run over the weekend. Took forever, but eventually it finished. Just hang in there. I've never had any problems where portage launched into an infinite loop instead of kicking out an error message and stopping.
Any problem can be solved. You just need to throw enough time and ninjas at it.
