i get:

Yes, works great without problems (now) ;-)

Have a look in the kernel that you have NOT activated DRI.

Alas, no improvement it seems! At least the TV works now, so I can pass the time while I try to figure out the problem. ;-) (This might not be as annoying if I didn't have to restart after every attempt to start X on the PCI card...)

Hey I justed install 7.0 on my older machine (I already installed it on my laptop). This time it mostly worked, but I'm getting a bunch of keysym errors when I start an X server. I'm not able to test if the X server is actually usable because I am not physically present at the machine, but I assume that it would be better not to have these error messages in any case:

Anyone else have a problem with their keyboard upon x starting? As soon as I logged out of gnome I could not type. I cannot use anything but the num pad...

I am running 6.8.1.902 built WITHOUT dlloader. The spyderous guide only applies to upgrading systems built WITH dlloader. 6.8.1.902 is no longer in Portage so I can't re-emerge it. What do I need to do to upgrade to 7.0? Do I need to first upgrade to 6.8.2-r6 with USE=dlloader, and THEN follow the spyderous guide to 7.0?

Thanks for any advice.

You have to unmerge previous instances of xorg, unmask a LOT of packages with package.mask and ~x86 (as mentioned in the guides and this thread) and then install... So I guess it would make NO sense at all to install another version of xorg before you try 7.0. It is highly unstable tho, so you can just try 6.8.2-r6 (which is ~x86) or -r4 which is completely stable.

widremann I get the same error as you. No xorg will not be useable.. This is what is causing my keyboard to not function. And one other thing.. this is caused by something with the xorg rc3 update. rc2 worked fine.

I am using Xorg 7_rc2 modularized. I have already noticed that gccmakedep hasnot been modularized so far, but I could not find a "quick'n'dirty hack" to solve the problem until it is officialy fixed.

Does anyone have a good hint how I could get this installed?

Code: Select all

Unmask and keyword x11-libs/libXp and

This is why modular Xorg is still hard masked. It's unstable and the dependencies aren't 100% done yet.

It appears as if the ATI drivers (fglrx 8.19.10) will need an update to work with RC3, I get these lovely errors:
No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 1 (32774), nplanes = 24
So of course dri and thus 3D does not work correctly. Last time I got these, it meant that driver did not support that version of Xorg (6.8 at the time IIRC).

It should be noted that its only the xorg-server itself package that causes this., rolling back 0.99.3 from 0.99.4 ensures 3D is back and working.

Ah yes - stupid me  I know in general about the dependency "problems" of the modular X but in this case I did not "trust" the error log - and did not understand it right. Thanks!

EDIT: OK, works now!

You have to unmerge previous instances of xorg, unmask a LOT of packages with package.mask and ~x86 (as mentioned in the guides and this thread) and then install...
Right, the guide says

Code: Select all

# emerge -Ca xorg-x11
# rm -rf /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11
# rm -rf /usr/lib/libGL*
But what I am scared of is, what happens if I do this when my old xorg-x11 was built WITHOUT USE=dlloader? The guide is explicit that you must have the USE flag set but there is no advice on how to proceed if it isn't.

I've had xorg 6.8.2 emerged without dlloader USE flag and had installed xorg 7.0.0 rc2 and had no problems. Then I've messup my hdd (with paragon partition manager) and had to reinstall whole system. Upgrading from 6.8.2 to 7.0.0 rc2 was simpler and less painfull than installing 7.0.0 rc2 on clean system.

It appears that xorg-server-0.99.4 and -r1 are the reason that the keysym errors appear. I downgraded to 99.3 and my keyboard functionality has returned.

Edit: It now appears that -r2 also has this same problem.

iotc247 and widremann,

Do you have: /usr/share/X11/XKeysymDB or is the file anywhere else, if yes where ?
What version of libX11 do you have?

To emerge it or to make sure that it works?

Edit: I notice there are several dependencies of X that disabling ipv6 has re-emerge.. Currently doing this to test the outcome..

I think I figured it out.. I am currently checking into the fix-xkb-compile-path-2.patch
patch.. I did notice that the 0.99.3 has this to be used... I did check to see if the patch did fix something in the new rc3 release of xorg-server and yes it does change something.. So we will see...

Update: It appears it still does not work.. *sigh*

To emerge it. Otherwise some packages would fail at the ./configure stage.
