Second display independant of first ?

Hello all,
One of those questions where the answer might simply be "no" 'cos I'm not sure if what I'm trying to do is possible with the X architecture or what terms I should be using if it is.

Anyway,
I have two monitors and 2 graphics cards. I have no problem getting a display on both with X by setting up 2 screens in xorg.org. The problem is I use the second display for monitoring logs but sometimes I have a second X server running to remotely access another machine. When I switch to that other server I lose the output to the second physical display.

Is there a way I can switch between 2 X servers on the primary graphics card/monitor while maintaining the same content on the second ?

regards,
mattc

Yes, it's rather simple, here''s how I've done it with gdm:

in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf in section

Code: Select all

[servers]
# These are the standard servers. You can add as many you want here
# and they will always be started. Each line must start with a unique
# number and that will be the display number of that server. Usually just
# the 0 server is used.
0=Standard
1=Standard
and later on the in file you will find

Code: Select all

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0
flexible=true
you've got 2 X starting up, both equal. If you want to have the second X to be different, give it another name (eg Otherone) and create a own section like

Code: Select all

[server-Otherone]
name=The other server server
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0
flexible=false
other examples can be found in the file, like [server-Terminal] or [server-Chooser] .. :)
Hope that helps

Thanks for the response but this appears to have the same effect as having 2 X servers running. Using ctrl-alt-f* to move between them still changes the content on both displays.
I think what I want is to have 2 virtual consoles explicitly linked to the seperate physical displays so that changing the console on one does not change the console on the other. Or of course, anything that would give the same results.
