I have a desktop running gentoo with kde and a laptop running gnome,I use alsa on both of those and everything works okay but only one problem.I dont have any system sounds.i get all other sound but jus no system sound. i know i didnt put a lot of info, post with any questions and i will answer.thanks for your help.

I think that for kde you need to use arts if you wana have system sounds. Did you compile with arts USE flag? If not, set it and then do an emerge --update --newuse world etc
However, if you've already used kde without arts the sound might be disabled, and you will need to reenable it. There is also some config file I can't remember of, that you need to edit and set something like "arts=true". this is switched to false if you disable system sound in KDE, but it doesn't get set back to true when you reenable them. Search for post describing this kde config file or someone please help, don't have my linux box here...
