Hi,
Nice work Terminator.
I have been having ipw2100 wireless issues with the past couple of nitro releases. The problem I had with nitro-sources-2.6.14-r1 is that I couldn't set the WEP key using iwconfig (it simply had no effect). Has this been fixed in this release??
Cheers,
Sat

I've used ext2, ext3, reiser2, reiser3, jfs and xfs. What do ppl think of xfs compared to ext3 or reiser4 ?
And good work Tiger.

OK, but may I say that priestjimfs is the fastest, most reliable fs to date.

I agree. smithjd15fsv23 is a speed demon! I've NEVER lost any files with it. I can recommend myself to anyone, because I know me inside-out. Err, I mean I can recommend -it- to anyone as the best fs, cause no one else carries the amount of experience with it that I do.

Wait, that doesn't work...

It's done.

Just booted this nitro release on my powerbook. On first view everything seems to work fine.
Will make a reallife stresstest tomorrow.

Thank you Tiger.

It's been a while sinc i tried a nitro kernel....

Now i'm on amd64, i get the following error when i want to compile your kernel:

Code: Select all

benson linux # make && make modules_install
  CHK include/linux/version.h
  SPLIT   include/linux/autoconf.h -> include/config/*
  CC arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.s
In file included from include/linux/suspend2.h:4,
                 from include/linux/suspend.h:12,
                 from arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.c:11:
include/linux/dyn_pageflags.h: In function `__get_next_bit_on':
include/linux/dyn_pageflags.h:36: error: `max_mapnr' undeclared (first use in this function)
include/linux/dyn_pageflags.h:36: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
include/linux/dyn_pageflags.h:36: error: for each function it appears in.)
make[1]: *** [arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.s] Error 1
make: *** [prepare0] Error 2
I'm not sure if you give support for amd64 users, but would be nice to get your patchset up and running - there aren't many others left...

cheers,
Benson

Yes, i do ;)

This problem already appeared once in the past. Use a memory model other than DISCONTIGMEM, and it will work fine.

Are you building an SMP kernel? Otherwise use the Flat memory model.

After recently upgraing to an opteron setup, this k8 nforce4 system works great with this release of nitro-sources as it did with my previous k7 setup (before the xp3200 died). Good job. Though I'm not really running in 64 bit mode (couldn't use my own custom livecd to install 64bit), but things are incredibly fast.

Where have you seen speedups?

My cpu is an Athlon XP 3000+ and I really haven't noticed anything faster than my last kernel, which was 2.6.14 with ck's 1G patch, running with preempt and cfq.

With an NF4/Opteron system what did you expect? ;) The CPU does not even know the word latency...

I'm using reiser4 as module. So i had an error

Code: Select all

reiser4: Unknown symbol __pagevec_release
To fix this error i added

Code: Select all

EXPORT_SYMBOL(__page_cache_release);
in
linux/mm/swap.c line 197

Now i have error with lircd-0.7.2.

Code: Select all

lirc_sir: Unknown symbol verify_area
as i know usage verify_area() is deprecated, but lircd works with 2.6.12.

[edit]I found, that verify_area is totally deprecated
http://lwn.net/Articles/149648/
now i patched lircd to use access_ok()
[/edit]
Using Gentoo since May 2003.

Well the biggest improvements is the entire architecture too, I noticed hdparm scores were nearly double of that before for example. My system wasn't slow before either, I usually tweak anything I can get my hands on for maxiumum performance. But this is nearly double the speed. For example before things flew in console such as doing rsync, but now if I was epileptic I'd probably get seizures. My fast 12ms responce lcd has trouble keeping up even. Everything responces with no latency (at least that can be noticed by a human operator) like priestjim said :).

One thing though is I was really pissed off and had to troubleshoot anything I could find on the forums because half of my nfroce4 features weren't working. Turns out it was because some specific apci or something feature wasn't enabled in the power management menu (I'm used to having them all off with my older xp3200) and it was causing for Pci-E and USB to not even get recognized. I'm not mad at anyone though, I understand it's not easy to switch everything including chipsets from 32bit to 64bit for hardware/software developers, all that matters is now it works and I love it! :)

incase you aren't already doing it, take advantage of nvidia's drivers for your ethernet, it provides way better performance and hardware acceleration. The forcedeth module in the kernel is buggy.

Thanks for the tip. Is that included in the nvidiak-kernel package or do I have to emerge/install something else?

nvnet is no longer in portage, you'll have to install it manually. However, you may want to look at this first:
