what is the actual function of each software?
how should I choose between them?

as I am reading the documention and installing a fresh Gentoo.

I used to be running iptables and dhcpcd.

as the /etc/conf.d/net file have mention both iproute2 and udhcp.

I do use BitTornado for BT download...

Thanks for reading and sharing your knowledge.

And... are there any real advantage of using shorewall over iptables?
since I don't find iptables to be very hard to configurate yet~~~

iptables - is the command line configuration for the firewalling system in linux, it handles packet filtering, NAT and packet mangling

shorewall - is just a front-end to iptables - it tries to make your life easier

iproute2 - is a replacement for the old route command that can handle things like mutliple routing tables so that you can do things like source address routing. it has very advanced functionality which unless you know what it is - you probably don't need. it is worth learning about though.

dhcpcd - is a dhcp client, you will need it for dynamically getting a IP address from a dhcp server

udhcp - is a lightweight dhcp client/server developed mainly for embedded systems, you are best sticking with dhcpcd

Thanks for your reply.

I will stick with the good old iptables + dhcpcd and take a peek to iproute2 and shorewall. :o
