I managed to get everything compiled, and even get entrance as my xdm, but when I try to log into an e session, it trys to open, then gives me the following in /var/log/messages:

Nov 19 20:29:41 camhanaich entranced: The session has ended normally.
Nov 19 20:29:43 camhanaich entrance: Debug: ipc_title = /var/lib/entrance_ipc_10696
Nov 19 20:29:43 camhanaich entrance: entrance_ipc_init: Success
Nov 19 20:29:49 camhanaich sisfb: WARNING: Refresh rate exceeds monitor specs!
Nov 19 20:29:49 camhanaich sisfb: WARNING: Refresh rate exceeds monitor specs!

Why am I getting this? What can I do to fix it?

Generally e17 works fine (or even great:) but I have a couple of problems:

1. Entrance - how can I configure/customize it. This few commands written in 'entrance -h' is isn't (I think) all we can wring from this marvelous login manager. How can I change theme not only for testing but permanently? I saw somewhere nice thing: after writing your login - entrance show's your foto/picture you set. How can I do it? Is there posibility of clickable list of all user in entrance, like in kdm?

2. Engage - I have problems with tray: It holds icons of Kadu (IM) and Psi. The rest icon which should be in tray are somewhere in the "Lost Windows" (Amarok, Akregator, K3b, Kuroo).
And the "?" sign. I download GANT iconset but there's "?" icon for Ibar, Pager and Start Modules. Is there a posibility to disable Engage showing icon for this modules?

3. Encoding - I set Polish encoding by

Code: Select all

enlightenment_remote -lang-set pl_PL.UTF-8
but it isn't work: http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5060/tytulpaska1wh.png. In place where should be Polish signs are blank spaces.

4. How can I set up permamently xscreensaver as my screensaver in E17?

take a look at /usr/share/entrance/build_config.sh - edit to your needs

KDE's systray implementation is NOT freedesktop.org compilant - therefore any KDE based systray crap won't work in engage (same with pypanel, fbpanel, trayer etc etc - they all follow freedesktop.org standard, but KDE doesn't)

maybe utf-8 issues? does it work with the default theme?

no idea about that one...

I cant seem to get cvs of ecore to build. Keeps failing saying that libXext.la isn't there. I've tried reemerging xorg-x11 (x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.99.15-r4) and it still doesn't work. This is the message I'm getting:

Code: Select all

/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libXext.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libXext.la' is not a valid libtool archive
Ive also checked out the cvs code manually and get the same thing. Even trying just ./configure with no options give this.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: I upgraded to xorg 7+ and it worked fine.

yeah, sort of... i launch dbus with entrance for example:

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/X11/Sessions/e17
#!/bin/sh
eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax`
/usr/bin/enlightenment-0.17

Hmmm Kadu is KDE application and it works. So there's no way of ordering/begging engage to hold QT tray icon?
maybe utf-8 issues? does it work with the default theme?
In every theme I have download (aprox 8 themes) the situation is the same: no Polish signs. Maybe it's 'cos standard encoding system in Poland is iso-8859-2?

Ok, whats the catch here?

Post by iancognito85 » Tue Nov 22, 2005 10:14 am

Just grabbed the CVS version of Enlightenment E17... 8O its fookin awesome.

Ive been a long time KDE user (about 6 years now) and have just tried out E17 and ive got to say, it is the most lightweight, nice looking and customizable (not to mention useable) WM i have used.

Whats the catch? When the final release comes out, im probably going to be saying goodbye to kde, at least, until 4 comes out.

I don't want to say anything against E because I haven't tried it myself but KDE 4 will probably be released before the final release of E17 at the current E development speed.

well no matter how long it takes to have a final (do we want a final?)
it is reallynice to see every single step which goes forward to e17.

thats the fun von the cvs i allways have the current final ;) this is much more fun than having a full final and doesn't improve in single steps on which you wait.

eventually i try kde4 sometimes eventually not ....who knoo we should have the same fun using itws.

btw the programmers are people who have fun by programming so we should have the same fun using it

Hmmm I just cant create any eapp's, I run the editor, pick a binary and icon and all that, but it doesn't get saved at all.

Back to GNOME I guess.

Don't give up so early ;)
Are_both_ the eap editors not working? There is an eap editor which you can get from the menu, and there is another eap editor (e_util_eapp_edit) which you will get if you install e_utils.

hahahahaa... how many people develop on kde the whole day and even get paid for it...

e17 won't be released before duke nukem forever is out, that's really no news :P

Yea. Enlightenment will take time.
You have to see that KDE has more devs to work on I believe.
So no wonders enlightenment is a bit slow.

At last they manage to update stuff and it is going forward constantly. you can use enlightenment atm but a lot of features because of the complete rewrite are missing. (At least I think most of the program gets rewritten when I look at the features list...) 8)

try the enlightenment_eapp command line program. It's really easy to use. I had problems with the graphical one so i'm just using this for now. other than that I haven't had any problems with e17 running for a few days.

How to install entropy?

Post by FieserKiller » Fri Nov 25, 2005 8:35 pm

I updated e17 recently, to benefit from various new features compared to my 2 month old cvs snapshot.

I used Evidence for file browsing, but want to change to entropy - but how?

I did a

Code: Select all

emerge -va eet dev-db/edb evas ecore embryo imlib2 edje e epeg epsilon esmart entrance emotion eclair ewl engrave e_utils e_modules etox erss entice engage evidence
to update.

I checked the forums and found an ebuild posted in this thread, but how do i use it? I copied it to /usr/local/portage/e17/ and added e17/entropy -* to /etc/portage/package.keywords, but emerge entropy doesn't work, portage says there is no match for entropy

E17 / Ecore Failed... "undefined reference"

Post by servo888 » Sat Nov 26, 2005 4:19 am

I'm trying to build e17, but ecore keeps failing on me. I do have evas installed first off, and I'm following the latest build order on the latest cvs.

Code: Select all

also the e17 chatroom told me to debug my own problems =\... Kind of pissed me off. But from what I've figured out - it seems to be an evas problem. But evas is installed, and the evas testing program runs fine. And I can't find any dupe installations.

The cvs of enlightenment does that sometimes. Usually you just wait a few days and it'll be fixed. I once started to debug that when I saw errors like that. There were many missing #include directives. After having done that, there was some configuration file missing. After that another. Then I stopped.
