temporary solution for running with fullscreen X11:

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo x11 -fs -zoom mysillymovie.avi
you could try other codecs like gl2...

I know xv is better on performance, but it could be that your card doesn't have hardware accelartion for this kind of thing, as xv is hw accelerated. Maybe you're not running the correct X-drivers? I saw someone post his xorg.xconf file and he had the card you also have...

aha! so maybe a fault in your kernel config? did you compiole the right video driver? And does mplayer output some serious complaints?

Weird. Mplayer can be weird sometimes though. About loosing mkv support: emerge -pv mplayer and see if your matroska useflag is set.

I am also experiencing "green and magenta" garbage trying to use XVideo (both xine and mplayer -vo xv) and also have a Trident CyberBlade (i/1). Have you tried:

mplayer -v -vo xvidix:cyberblade_vid.so

Although it should be supported, this gives me:
[cyberblade] Can't find chip

Also can you take a screenshot with xwd, ksnapshot, or GNOME screen-shooter? When I do this I get a solid blue image, even though the video window appears green and magenta on my display. Also the video window changes pattern when I scroll my Kconsole. Does this match your problem?

Someone else on this forum seems to be experiencing the same thing but using an ATI:

the solution i found was to upgrade to first compile mplayer with only the dependencies along with extra USE flags like matroska and anything else u might need.

http://www.gentoo-portage.com/media-video/mplayer/USE

next i compiled mplayer-1.0_pre6 with the same USE flags and it worked great.

USE="matroska..." emerge -ova mplayer

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" USE="matroska..." emerge -va mplayer

p.s. i also installed xv but dunno if that did anything

right after i finished compiling it works great but now it gives that green screen again

Probably not; the image viewer "xv" is not related to the XVideo extension. To see if your X server supports it do

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b$ grep XV /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) Loading extension XVideo
(II) Loading extension XVideo-MotionCompensation
Your card must also support YV12 planar and and YUY2 packed, e.g.:

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b$ xvinfo
[...]
      id: 0x32315659 (YV12)
        guid: 59563132-0000-0010-8000-00aa00389b71
        bits per pixel: 12
        number of planes: 3
        type: YUV (planar)
      id: 0x32595559 (YUY2)
        guid: 59555932-0000-0010-8000-00aa00389b71
        bits per pixel: 16
        number of planes: 1
        type: YUV (packed)
See file:///usr/share/doc/mplayer-1.0_pre6/DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv

What exactly is your integrated video controller?

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b$ /sbin/lspci |grep VGA
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i1 (rev 6a)

Do you get solid green or some magenta? Do you see a blue background if you move the window around? Have you tried xine?

Please tell if it ever works again...

um it only works after i recompile...

after i reboot it messes up again...

i also tried xine but it just lags badly and when i put it on fullscreen the picture disappears

my video controller's the same as urs and my screen is mostly green with bits of blue and changes when i move it around..it's also different for different files...

i think i'll try vlc next but if that doesn't work i guess i'll just recompile everytime...only takes like 10-15 mins anyways

Here is a partial fix: fib in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and say your monitor is very slow...

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
[...]
# HorizSync 30.0 - 70.0
        HorizSync 30.0 - 40.0
# VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0
        VertRefresh 50.0 - 80.0
Now xv is happy, but resolution is only 800x600.

Maybe tweak Option XvHsync/XvVsync?

Interesting, does X start in a different video mode after you reboot? What if you just restart X without rebooting, does it still work?

Because I don't have the problem I can only give some general help: have you tried moving the ,mplayer directory, and let mplayer make a new one (with standard settings)? Helped me out more than once... (few days ago I gave a guy this advice, and his problem solved, so you never know ;))

This is not possible to my knowledge, xv is an overlay so won't get captured. You can capture with X11 but then your screen would be normal...

Apparently Xv breaks when the screen resolution gets greater than its maximum image size. Since xvinfo gives

maximum XvImage size: 1024 x 1024

we are hosed if the (Virtual) X resolution starts out above this. Thus with a line like "Virtual 1024 768" in your xorg.conf, Xv will work, but then you can't switch to higher-res modes on-the-fly (i.e. with Xrandr). On the other hand "Modes 1024x768 1400x1050" lets you Xrandr between 1024x768 and 1400x1050 Virtual resolution, but starts you in 1400x1050 Virtual resolution, hence Xv is broken.

1. If there is any way to startup X in a low Virtual resolution and Xrandr to a higher one, maybe this will solve the problem. Unfortunately X always seems to pick the highest allowed physical resolution as the starting virtual resolution.

2. If you are happy with 1024x768 then you are all set.

3. Does Xv ever work for you in a resolution higher than your maximum Xv image size? It seems like this is broken behavior; I would think that 1024x1024 means the largest Xv window size, but it should still work in a window on a higher-resolution display (though not fullscreen of course).

but i'm already at 1024x768...

ok things got worse

i tried to compile vlc but it wouldn't compile so i used the masked version but after i compiled it it wouldn't show a video screen at all but i could still hear the sound.

so i did what was suggested i unmerged mplayer and deleted .mplayer and recompiled it again but this time the green screen appeared immediately instead of after reboot so now i'm screwed...

green xvideo vs acceleration

  • Quote

Post by zelial » Fri Feb 04, 2005 12:17 am

hi,

i have the same problem.

inspired by this page: http://purge.bash.sh/~bredroll/satsite/ , i switched the acceleration off (Option "accel" "off" at the Device section of my XF86Config-4) and xvideo works again!

it has a major drawback: scrolling REALLY slowed down.

so i'm switching configurations ten times a day :(

I too have the same problem with mplayer VLC and Xine, and I have a.. *drumroll* Trident Cyberblade A/i1 on my old toshiba laptop.

If someone has come to solve this problem please post a link, hint or any information that could help us other Cyberblade users to solve this, also I cant seem to configure the framebuffer properly with the tridentfb driver, this however was easily solved by sticking to vesafb or vesafb-tng.

Hope to see some beneficial replies!

Thank you!

**edit** Atleast in VLC i managed to get most videoformats to play properly when choosing the X11 method for video output, hope this helps someone with this very non linux friendly graphics adapter **edit**

Like Mason said, PLEASE, I beg you ..... post a link or help us out, cuz its VERY difficult to use my gentoo box with the lag and whatnot. I see a trident driver under portage but its hard masked and people tell me to stay away...plz help :(
