The problem with the long timespan for saving (the hdd works like while the locate database being updated (but this isn't the cas)) is only with 2.6.14 version. If I boot 2.6.12 it's gone. So I'll stay with this great release which has been in use since July for now. "Never touch a running system"

I have this problem too! And I am using reiser4 1.0.5. I just rebuilt my entire Gentoo system using the Stage 1/3 method (search for it on the forums) and whenever I try to save I also have extremely long save times. My hard disk goes crazy and i can't use the computer for about 20 - 30 seconds; and it is only made worse by the fact that I have a slower laptop drive.
The program with the worst startup times is gedit. If you try to open a file like /etc/X11/xorg.conf it will freeze up my system for about 30 seconds before anything becomes responsive, then when I save I also have to wait a long time. It even happens the second or third time I have to open the file, even though the file should be cached already (I have 1.25GB of RAM on the afformentioned laptop).
For me the last stable nitro 2.6.12 rc5 worked fine in this regard, but it seems that an update to reiser4 and the accompaning update to the kernel to support reiser4 1.0.5 has introduced this problem to me.
I am going to try and recompile gedit using different W flags in the make.conf. Right now I am using --sort-common and some other linking optimizations that have made most of my programs way faster to start, but maybe something new has broken their functionality? My compiler optimizations are fairly tame, just -O2 -march and pipe.
One question. If I have an older version of reiser4, can I update to this new kernel? Or do I have to update the reiser4? Because last time I tried updating my reiser4 partition blew up and I had to rebuild the entire system.
