No drives in My Computer in Gnome 2.12 !! (Please Help!!)

  • Quote

Post by Jazz » Wed Oct 05, 2005 10:20 am

After upgrading my system to gnome 2.12, i dont see any of the mounted filesystems except root, cdrom and network in the My computer window..

I have to manually disable hal from auto start and just keep dbus at boot time, then i can see all the mounted file systems.. ,
also, the current hal/dbus combo, dosent provide me with a icon to the removable disks like usb, etc when i plug them in..

worked fine with gnome 2.10.. anyone else having this problem ? i've already added myself to the plugdev group.

Bye,
jazz

Check the large gnome 2.12 thread if you haven't done that. I think there are several posts about this and similar stuff.

Same problem here.. there's no solution yet on that thread. Maybe we can get one here.

What we know so far:

Now that gnome-volume-manager uses pmount, there's no need for adding lines to /etc/fstab. Adding oneself to the plugdev group is necessary for g-v-m to (p)mount the devices, and if a device is not "removable" - like USB external disks - then it has to be added to /etc/pmount.allow

Regardless of any of that, nautilus no longer shows icons for removable devices, and clicking them on "Computer" makes nautilus try to mount the device, even if it's already mounted, instead of opening the folder.

So.. does anyone have a different experience?

I've had similar problems with this.
Please see my thread and see if this helps:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-38 ... n+usb.html

Although I can say now that Nautilus for me is working correctly and showing my drives after I plug them in. Also, when I click them, it automounts and changes icon to show. Then it opens the folder correctly and right-clicking and ejecting works fine also. Just sometimes I want to unmount instead of eject because ejecting unmounts all the partitions!

My biggest problem is still the naming conventions in /media. It gets jumbled up with a mix of my custom names and the default ones, making it unpredictable. Also, if I plug in and eject my USB HDD twice it hangs my entire system on the second eject forcing me to reboot!

All my removable devices appear in Computer unmounted. When I click on them they are mounted fine and added to the desktop. The only exception is the cdrom which automatically mounts any disc and puts them on the desktop.

yeh I have the problem too, I believe I commented on it on the thread but I have yet to walk over to bugzilla.

Let me explain.
I have no issues with removeable drives, my ipod, I plug that in, it automouts icons come up in "Computer" and the desktop. No problems there.
I don't have fstab entries anymore for remvoable stuff (if that matters)

The problem is that my data partitions such as /mnt/massdata, /mnt/vdata, /mnt/massdata2 don't appear in Computer (they are mounted) just like the original poster. The bit i find annoying is if I'm trying to save a file they should also appear in the SAVE/OPEN dialog which of course now they don't so I have to navigate the "filesystem" to the mount point.

Turn HAL off and it works.
The new gnome-vfs 2.12.1 doesn't do anything better in this regards, anyway i believe its a nautilus / gnome-volume-manager thing but that's me poking a stick in the dark.

Least isn't just me, and the next person that says use ivman will get shot :p

It just worked, i plugged my thumb drive and ipod and they both appear and mount.
You do have "Mount removable drives when hot plugged" select in "Removable drives and Media" preference setting right?

My only problem is that my normal fixed data partitions do not appear

My version info

Code: Select all

sys-apps/pmount-0.9.3-r3
sys-apps/hal-0.5.4
sys-fs/udev-068-r1
gnome-base/gnome-volume-manager-1.5.1

Yes i have that option selected, i had udev-070, and even downgrading it to udev-068-r1 dint help much !

What can i be doin wrong ? even my usb drives dont get auto mounted, forget the auto mount, i'd be happy if i only see the icon when i insert 'em !

Any suggestions ?

This drives me crazy.

I also filed a bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106766 (still marked as new) two weeks ago! I don't care if my bug is marked a dupe and this new bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=108260 becomes the default one, all I want is a reaction that gives feedback that there is a problem. Every message with this problem is flooded with comments that it is working, but all in all there are enough reactions from people where it isn't working and this indicates that there is a serious problem! Gnome 2.10 is just working in this department, but gnome 2.12 isn't and it isn't working with 2.12.1(.1) either. And yes, the user is member of the plugdev (and haldaemon) group.

So everyone who has a simular problem (and have its user as a member of the plugdev group) add you comments to the bug above . Maybe then action is being taken.

Woohoo ! ok looks i got something working here..

There seems to be something wrong with the newer versions of UDEV ! , So all the users that cant get to have an icon for their removable media in the My Computer when they insert have to downgrade their udev versions to udev-58

After it, run udevstart or reboot...

VOILA, plugin your removable media and you'll see an icon for it in My Computer, upon clickin it gets mounted into /media.

Still i havent found a solution for the rest of the dissappeared icons !

Thanx,
Jazz

Ok, so it looks like some of the issues get solved by recompiling the kernel wothout the prempt setting,..

But is there any other solution to this ?cuz this dosent seem to good to be a solution,

I have the same problem and recompiling the kernel without preempt don't change anything.

My versions info:

Code: Select all

sys-apps/pmount-0.9.6
sys-apps/hal-0.5.4
sys-fs/udev-071
gnome-base/gnome-volume-manager-1.5.4
gnome-base/gnome-vfs-2.12.1.1

I have udev 0.70 and my kernel is premptable even the "big kernel block". When I insert a hotplug device it shows up but doesn't automount. Clicking it will mount it and subsiquent clicks open it rather than trying to mount it again. So basically I can't get it to automount even though I told it to automount stuff in gnome-volume-manager. Other than that it works.

I didin't explain what is my problem but it is the same as Jazz. In "My Computer" I have cdrom, network and root. If I plug a removable drive as an usb thumb the automount works and I can use my removable drive.

I just can't see my 2 windows partition which are mounted in /mnt via fstab.

That is exactly my problem!!!
My CDROM/DVD are fine so is USB-sticks but for some reason my 3 other partitions (windows, progs and storage) are not showing in "my computer" although they are mounted and I can goto /mnt/progs ... and browse???

Funny thing was when GNOME2.12 when ~arch my USB and CDROM wouldnt show but my HD would. A few updates and then the roles were reversed

any idea?

Put "user" in the windows partitions options in fstab. This will make them appear.

Nope. There is something else wrong.
I've always had user and the partitions below are mounted (at boot) and accessable my my user, yet don't show up in Gnome 2.12.
Turn HAL off and log back in and they are there in Computer, but then automounting breaks. like the orginal poster my thumb drives etc mount automatically but these partitions don't have icons showing up.

My bug got marked as a dupe, and the I swear the dev has it wrong, but I don't want to fight

Code: Select all

# 200GB disk
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/vdata reiserfs user,noatime,notail,user_xattr 0 0
/dev/hdb3 /mnt/massdata reiserfs user,noatime,notail,user_xattr 0 0

# 200GB sata
/dev/sda1 /mnt/massdata2 reiserfs user,noatime,notail,user_xattr 0 2
/dev/sda2 /mnt/spd ext3 user,noatime,user_xattr 0 2
Also since the last time I replied I've moved on gome gnome-volume-manager-1.5.4 and upgraded pmount

Yes.

I just went into gconf editor under /system/storage there are a couple options to display different drives. I selected them all, because I have IDE and SCSI drives. I logged out and back in and now everything is showing up. Including / and /boot. But this appears to be the way your supposed to do this. I can't believe no one has said anything about this. At least I've never seen it. From the 10 minutes of work I've put in it seems to me like hal is telling nautilus/gnome-vfs that these drives are internal and nautilus/gnome-vfs were just following the settings in gconf that said don't show internal non removable drives. I'd like to know if this works for anyone else.

Now I'm off too figure out how to rename stuff and hide partitions like root that a user would never need. If anyone knows this part let me know.
