Intel HDA sound vs. spdif 5.1 problem

Trying to build my MythTV box right now I fell in problem with sound output.
I have ASUS P5LD2 Motherboard with integrated sound. lspci output:

I'm trying to use SPDIF coaxial output to send audio to my amplifier.
Sound is just fine when I'm playing my mp3 or video files, but only with 2 channels.
All my attempts to get 5.1 output fails.
As far as I can understand I can do it by using something like this:

mplayer -ao alsa -ac hwac3, filename.avi

to get 5.1 from avi file (with ac3 sound).
So far, it doesn't work and I can hear only silence.

Does anyone have some expirience how to solve this?

PS: Using kernel : 2.6.13-gentoo-r5.

Seems like my aplifier can't recognize the digital stream correctly.
It always use "Dolby Prologic" instead of switching to "Dolby Digital".
Weird thing -- it was switched to the right state ones during my playing with load/unload sound modules, but I can't figure out how to repeat this settings.

Any suugestions?

I'm thinking of building my 'next PC' on the ASUS P5LD2, and your thread caught my eye.
Btw, you can find 5.1 samples at http://www.sr.se/multikanal/english/e_index.stm
http://www.sr.se/laddahem/MultiKanal/DD ... DD_640.zip contains a surround test that works fine on my Logitech Z-680 sound system.

I am having similar issues over at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-40 ... l+hda.html was hoping the problem was solved. Is it still unresovled?
