Just tried to compile quake3 from the source in portage, and it seemed to compile fine, but I get

Sys_Error: Couldn't load default.cfg
I tried to make a dummy default.cfg in .q3a, but to no avail. Any ideas?

default.cfg is in pak0.pk3 (from Q3 CD), if I recall. Did you copy it over?

The source doesn't work without proper .pk3 files.

It *might* work with the mods in portage, provided they have their own default.cfg, but I don't know for sure as I haven't tried it.

I though quake3-data worked like quake2-data: we could choose to install from CD or download a shareware version off the Internet. Guess I was wrong.

Maybe it installs a pak0.pk3 usable by total conversion mods like tremoulus?
Had I known I would not have bought quake III in Ebay...
But I guess is ok supporting Id ;)

the new ebuilds (the SVN ones) seem to put their stuff directly in /usr/games/bin,
whereas the old ones put their ones into /opt/quake3 and made a 'shell' script to make it run
if you'd run quake3 inside /opt/quake3 (just like normal, not like ./quake3, just quake3, it'd run normally :))
you could just move the binary into /opt/quake3 and remake/copy that shellscript, but the next release would break it again :(

While the Q3 engine is open source now, I doubt that the media is free. All the maps, textures, sounds, etc are in the .pk3 files on the CD. Also, if you want to play Q3 online you'll still need a valid cdkey.
