Linux Answering Machine (LTModem)

Ok, so I dropped in an "Agere" modem (which is a Lucent Winmodem I believe) and emerge'd mgetty (which does vgetty too). I installed the webmin interface for the not-so-technically minded at this place to check messages.

At the moment I can't get the program to convert to the modem's format... it just won't convert. I don't know why and any advice would be appreciated. Tried ALL the varieties webmin prescribes and I don't know what the modem would natively want anyway...
