Gentoo as my main on my laptop and desktop. I tried other distros but this is the one. Although I wish there was a possiblilty for package installs like ubuntu, much quicker on slow laptops.

I do have winxp for games (guildwars), cedega doesnt really work well, which is a pity (I don't want to compromise any graphics).

Well what I'd really like to do is install Gentoo 64bit version as my main OS... then use VMware to run Windows so I can test Windows apps.

I'd really like to get ardour working under Gentoo as well. I want to get into some recording very soon.

Amd53 3200+, 2G, Asus A8V Deluxe, Gentoo 64-bit.

I'm running Gentoo as my only OS on my little cacheing proxy server. (AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with 768M Ram, on an MSI mainboard and Gentoo 2005.1)
I'm running Gento 2005.1 as my main OS on my AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 2G ram on an Asus A8V Deluxe mainboard.
If I need another OS, I run it in VMware.
I have a laptop that I almost never use, and a media server box that are both running Windows XP Pro.

Well I use Gentoo most of the time, however I boot Window$ from time to time (like one night a week) to kick some ass in Day of Defeat. Dont get me wrong I can run DoD in Linux but due to my box's age (fun and weirdly enough) the game has better performance in the other os.
The only other person in the house using the box is my mom and she changed from Window$ to Linux smoothly. After seeing that she could do everything she needed to work she asked: "So, wheres the solitaire in this thing?" I summoned kpat and shes been happy ever since.

Btw, is there solitaire for Gnome? My moms whines me about that all the time.
Edit: I should google before asking stupid questions. I found this 'Aisleriot' but it isn't in portage. It's not in gnome-games.

Gentoo is my main OS--I'd say I spend around 80% of my time under Gentoo.

I dual-boot with XP Pro for a variety of things, including certain games, NLE video editing (I'm sorry, but Cinelerra just doesn't cut it), Softimage XSI (I can't seem to get it working on Gentoo), and playing certain video files that are not yet well supported by Linux software. With the exception of NLE and XSI, I could easily get along on Gentoo exclusively since Windows-only games and those few file formats aren't particularly important.

I spend about 90% of my computer time on my Gentoo box, the other 10% is on OS X using either computer lab machines or my PowerBook :)

Gentoo is currently my main os, but I'm getting ready to put windows back on it for gaming. I thought I would be successful with cedega/wine, but nope. Most of the main games I play have yet to work, and the ones that do, graphical glitches that make it ugly (CS:s dod:s). THough I did pick up quake 4 and I've had ut2004, both work great. Sadly I'm just not having much success with gentoo.

Server: Gentoo

I have another machine I'm going to use to learn *BSD and mess around a little with OpenSolaris. The only Windows machine in the house is the one the rest of my family uses.

Yup, it is. In fact, I have two different installations of it on three different partitions. There are two more unused partitions on this disk, though: the first is/was Windows, but I haven't run that since ... April? May? I reinstalled XP a few months ago but haven't used it...when I later when to install Gentoo after it, I discovered that the XP install process had screwed my drive. Fdisk reported that every cylinder, every sector, everything had suddenly been offset one byte. In other words, my whole disk took one jump to the left, rendering everything unusable.

So, I decided dual-booting with Windows wasn't worth it, so I just wiped the partition table and started over with only Gentoo. And I was even more determined to make Linux work for me; so far, it can do everything that I (rarely) needed Windows to do.

I still might quad-boot with Gentoo, Windows, Gentoo/FreeBSD, and Solaris someday soon . . . but Gentoo is my only OS for the time being. :D

actually it is in portage...it's just part of the regular gnome-games package, but it will only build if you have "guile" (as a USE flag) in your /etc/make.conf.
wgi wrote:You might want try qemu with the new kqemu module :)
i second that. qemu is amazing...don't pay for vmware if you haven't tried qemu, which is excellent and free. with the kqemu kernel module, it runs windows 98 so quickly that i don't notice any difference from how i remember it running "for real" (outside an emulated environment). i use it to run office 2000 (because, although openoffice 2 is better, ms office is still handy for collaborative work with windows users) and also to preview web pages in internet explorer. it takes about ten seconds to "boot" from the disk image.

apparently windows 98 is SLOW in qemu...windows 95 and 2000 run faster...so it's pretty impressive.

I have been using Debian for some time. I am seriously considering Gentoo. The fact that it is tailor made for my system and the fact that it is generally more up to date than Debian are major factors. Debian has been very stable and reliable. If I can get the same reliability with Gentoo and more up to date assessibility software, I will be sold.

Jeff

Ps. I don't even have windows on my home computer. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with it at work.

I've installed Gentoo a couple times. But, I've always had problems I either couldn't resolve or didn't have time to resolve. My latest install has gone pretty well. I'm building a media pc with tv tuner, dvd+rw drive, etc. I'm also building a Gentoo system for my 7-year old nephew. I think he's a bit interested in computers, so it'll be a great learning tool for him. We'll see how that goes.

My wife's laptop is has WinXP installed.
