Gentoo has been my main OS for a while now. A few months back I was dual-booting with Windows because I needed to work collaboratively on Word documents, but if I need to do that again, I'll set up WINE or something and do it in Gentoo. Now my home PC is Gentoo and nothing else.

At work I have to use Windows, but I'm seriously considering buying a laptop and taking Gentoo to work with me. ;)

If its just word I found openoffice 2.0 acting as a good replacement for msoffice. Try it out, because since 2 beta many interoperatibility issues are solved. I've had once only one real accident with OO: A corporation has send me a formular in doc format, comprising checkboxes, buttons and so on, which I couldn't recognize in openoffice as such. Hence we had a phonecall where I've asked about this silly lists. 8O
This has clarified the situation. Good idea to check wheather meanwhile this company has changed to PDF to be more collaborative as they've said. ;-)

thanks...i may give it a try. i was using ximian openoffice at the time...it was perfectly decent for my own stuff, but it wasn't up to scratch in terms of word documents that were being worked on by myself and several others running windows. not that it should have needed to be...it should be microsoft's responsibility to build decent support for open formats into its products, rather than everyone else's responsibility to try to be compatible with one company's products...but the reality at present is that most desktop users are using that stuff by default and talking about how things "should" be doesn't help...i needed my word processor to open msword documents, edit them, and send them back again, all without any change in appearance etc. openoffice couldn't do it, and since i already had a windows partition backed up, i just slapped it on my spare drive and booted into windows for that one app.

it's still the individual apps that are the biggest reason for semi-computer-literate users staying with windows, imho. there are distros now (i'm thinking ubuntu in particular) that are so polished and user-friendly that the learning curve in terms of the filesystem, admin tools etc. is almost irrelevant...everything just works in the gui. but...i'm still waiting for an "endnote" equivalent in linux (pybliographer is a good effort, but it doesn't come close)...i still miss my windows dvd decryption, editing and burning tools...and as for games...

anyway, it's good to know openoffice.org 2.0 is better with the interoperability stuff...i'm using abiword now, but may try ooo again the next time i need to work with word docs, rather than look at wine/crossover/vmware/etc.

Gentoo is my only OS, on my workstation, on my notebook - I don't count my server... It's just doing it's job, I don't really use it - it's running Debian (sid).

At work I have to use Windows :(
But there is a good possibility to let Windows feel some kind like *nix using bblean instead of explorer :)

Games, multimedia, everything imaginable is doing really fine with Gentoo!

3 workstations running Gentoo.
1 server running Gentoo.
1 laptop running Gentoo (does have w2k installed as well but I only boot that when using the laptop as a dvd player since the tvout doesn't work properly yet under xorg).

Cheers,

13 Server boxes -> gentoo
2 Workstations -> gentoo
0 other x86 HW

Windows adresses the things used for closing the holes in the wall which are not doors - not an OS

- gentoo and (through re-partition and copying gentoo-/ back to the wrong partition screwed  ) OS X on my iBook
- gentoo as Xen-dom0 and ttylinux as domU on my athlon @home
everything runable on xen will tested as soon as I got net-access at home, but I'm pretty sure, gentoo will stay the main OS ^^
and I gotta build a smaller dom0 with gentoo and a gentoo-building-domU for.. ehm, building ^^ but for this I need my 120gig-hdd back from my roomie... for my partition schemes one 40gig-drive is pretty small... ^^"

Definitely Gentoo is my main OS - although I write this posting running Win XP ... - . Win XP is just for gaming - those games don't running with wine-emulation, and still for burning CD-R's because Linux always freezes, when I'm trying to burn a CD. :(

For surfing, emails, chatting, coding, writing - tex, jieha -, Gentoo is my very favorite.

I'm currently in a public place on a Mandrake computer, but at home I have gentoo as my main operating system. I also have a windows installed but it doesn't work. I wanted to make a dual boot but something is wrong and I know what it is but I always say " I'll fix it so I have a working dual boot." But I usually don't really feel like it. Maybe someday I will not be too lazy to fix it... maybe. Why should I need windows? For school off course, most classes I have involve programming and that can all be done on linux. We use unix systems at school as wel so... But some subjects require certain programs that run on windows.
The only real failing is when you stop trying.

Well, I finally cracked the last bastion ... my "gaming box" (number 7 of 7 at home) now runs Gentoo, too. I admit I still have a small windoze partition (30G) for the occasional game I buy. That was why my fastest box was 'doze until now. But since the gaming industry decided to put out 98% crap (like bad "multi platform" sh*t or "greatly inspired movie adaptions") I think I won't have more than one or two games installed anymore ... which makes room for a real OS on my nice, silent box. One more thing to make me happy :D

I just can't stand 'doze anymore. Impossible.

You know, I tried this before - running a Linux-only desktop. I started with Linux in like 1990. But it wasn't until like two years ago I felt I am really not missing anything on the desktop. There are still messy parts, but finally even Alsa has matured into something quite usable. And the fact that I don't miss anything now ... well :D

Oh, and of course, there is no doubt about Gentoo being the greatest thing that ever happened to Linux. At least when you got a halfway decent machine 8) My old double P2-333 really has a hard time these days :D

Desktop - OSX Tiger, I would run gentoo on it if the sodding thing would boot a live CD without crashing (Getting a new mobo so hopefully it'll sort it)
Laptop - Gentoo (Windows XP is installed but the option is hidden and password protected in grub)
Server - Debian/Gentoo (Setting up the gentoo system when the box isn't needed - needs a hard drive swap)
Not Y3K compliant

Now that I have some time to spend installing and configuring everything, Gentoo will hopefully return as my main OS within the next few days or weeks. :)

Fully gentoo on my primary desktop, OS X on my other (it serves its purposes, and does some of the sexiest GUI tricks I've ever seen. also home to the best IM client and best SNES emulator ever created. oh, and it's wonderful for photoshop and for video editing, which I do a fair bit of).

I've never found a game I wanted to play that wouldn't run in gentoo (and in fact, only one that required wine/cedega. most of my stuff runs in dosbox or scummvm.)

And whoever mentioned bblean, I liked it for a while, but the more I use fluxbox, the more I get angry at the lack of features in bblean. It's a great idea, and a large improvement over explorer, but I'd much rather have a clone of fluxbox than blackbox.

However, it doesn't really matter, because I've never run windows on a personal machine. Went from Mac OS to OS X to Slack to Gentoo, completely skipping over nasty microsoft products. But, IPU knows, we still have to deal with windows a good deal in our daily lives.

Hello there!

Yes, surely, it is the main OS on all my computers and this is very convenient. Gentoo does a very good job.
IMHO Gentoo seems to be the best Linux distro I have ever used.

Yeah, I run Gentoo production servers at the office, but for the sake of The Utmost Ugliest Bitch (TM)* I am forced to install a couple of RHEL4s now. I cannot express how that thing sucks and how great it is to have Gentoo...
