Warsow [Linux FPS]

  • Quote

Post by TenPin » Sat Oct 08, 2005 3:19 am

I haven't seen anyone mention this game in the forums and it isn't in portage. It seems to have been out for about a year and is maturing quite well now.

Warsow is:

* Standalone game for Windows and Linux ;
* 3D Engine based on Qfusion (a modification of Quake 2 GPL engine) ;
* eSport oriented FPS ;
* Fast-paced gameplay focused on trix (trick jumps) and the art of moving ;
* Complete Power-up System including Weak and Strong fire mode for each weapon ;
* Cartoonish graphics with celshading-like_but_not_Manga style, mixing dark, flashy and
dirty textures, matching with action full of fun and speed ;
* References : Quakeworld, Quake3 CPMA, Jet Set Radio, Speedball.

Its a lot of fun and under active development still.

If it runs really slow because you don't have a super fast graphics card, all you have to do is add this to the bottom of warsow/basewsw/qfconfig.cfg

seta r_bloom "0"
seta r_shadows "0"
setar_dynamiclights "0"
setar_polyblend "0"

If it doesn't startup because of an error then add this to the same file:

seta gl_ext_texture3D "0"

Use the warsow-sdl executable because the sound works with it.

Is the gameplay good? Is it online enabled, and if so - are there any good servers out there?

The gameplay rocks. Its very challenging with a lot to learn.
The online gameplay works great. So does LAN play.
There are about 10 online servers right now and if you wait on a server for about 10 minutes someone will join you.

Alternatively go ask for games on irc, channel #warsow on quakenet. There are specific pickup channels listed there too.

Played for about an hour now, and I have to say that this by far the best free FPS-game for Gnu/Linux. The graphics have a soft cell-shaded touch, and it looks freakin' sweet in higher resolution. The gameplay feels really smooth, and - most importantly-, fun. It's a shame that so few are playing it (relatively seen), though...

The installation is a breeze, just gunzip it wherever you want and run the executable.

No source code so I could compile? I thought it was open source. :roll:

As far as I know it's licensed under GPL, which means that they have to give you the source code if you ask for it - even if it's not available on their main site. Still a shame that they don't hand it over willingly, though...

Sound doesn't work:

------- sound initialization -------
ALSA lib pcm.c:6449:(snd_pcm_slave_conf) unknown format S16
ALSA snd error, cannot open device default (Invalid argument)

ALSA works with other games.

You can add bots with "callvote addbots <number of bots> at the console.

You can do some insane strafe jumping, jump combos in this game but it takes a while to learn the movement if your not a QW/CPMA player. The "special move" button allows you to jump off walls and gain extra speed on ramps. With a bit of practice you can get from the bottom of the level to the bottom in a few moves.

Once you learn the maps and find an opponent who also knows the maps, games can get pretty fun as you invent more insane ways to get where you need to go fast.

Where do you get the navigation files for the bots?

I wasn't aware of the need for navigation files for the bots, I think the bot routes are in the map pk3 files. I just FFA with 2 or 3 usually. Its not really worth dueling a bot, its easy to pick up a duel online though. If you ask on irc, someone will teach you the movement stuff if you want.

The navigation files were in the "navigation" folder but they weren't loading properly when I launched the game normally. I had to start the game with "./warsow +map <mapname>" and the addbots and it would work. It wouldn't load the navigation files otherwise.

I downloaded the latest release, untarred it, and ran ./warsow

It's is slow as death. What am I doing wrong?

My box is a Athlon XP 3200+ with 1 Gb of RAM and a Radeon 9800XT. It should have no problem handling something built off of Quake2.
