Heh, probably not. If you do, I just remembered that you'd have to make sure to get rid of the PROVIDES="virtual/*" in your modified Xorg ebuild, so that portage would let two of 'em be installed at once. That'd get in the way too otherwise.

I have tried over and over, with no sucess, to get modular x to work. My xorg.conf seems fine. Also I dont get any errors when I startx, besides one

Fatal server error:

Man I wish I knew how to copy shit into links ( yah I know , use the middle click button...it doesn't work).

Anyways, I'm using the nvidia drivers (nvidia-kernel / nvidia-glx). I've tried emerging them multiple times, with different kernels. I talked with a guy from a different thread with what seemed to be the same problem, and he said adding

BusId "PCI:2:0:0"
and
Option "NvAGP "0"
helped him get it working. But I did that and I'm still xless.
I have the same warning, but everything works for me (tm). modular X, nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel

Are you using a >=2.6.14-rc2 kernel? I have exactly the same problem with that version; 2.6.14-rc1 and earlier work fine.

Well...as I've been using reiser4 for quite some time, I've been using the latest nitro-sources. so... 2.6.13.2-nitro1 (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-383064.html). I'll look into patching the vanilla-sources since you brought it up.

EDIT: Screw that...I'll just try out mm-sources hehehe.

Have you ever tried a framebuffer and VBERestore option?
In the previous monolithic version of xorg, I had no problem.
But, it is no more possible to return the console with framebuffer.
I'm using dell 700m, which has 1280x800 wide screen, but it is possible to run only on 1024x768 frame buffer screen.
VBERestore in conjunction with fbdev? No, haven't tried it, sorry. But have you tried to use the i810 driver and the 855resolution tool (in portage) to get full resolution?
I used i810 driver and 855 resolution, so i got full resolution except frame buffer.
In console, the screen resolution was 1024x768 with vesafb.
Thanks for your quick answer. :)
Recently, I tried to install xorg-6.99.15-r2, and then I noticed that i810 driver of new xorg is broken
in the function of VBERestore option. So, the problem is not from the modular-x, but new i810 driver.

Has anyone had any luck getting modular X going with multiple monitors?

My desktop is working fine with it's primary card (using the nvidia driver) - even Twinview seems to work okay. But as soon as I try to do anything with the second card (a TNT2 so I'm using the nv driver) X locks at a blank screen. Once I reboot the machine the log is inconclusive - it seems to think it started up fine.
There are a couple of messages about invalid memory allocations, but I'm getting that from my primary card too which doesn't seem to have any trouble.
What are you, stupid?

It also transpires that buttons 2 and 3 are swapped on my mouse when using the evdev driver. Anyone know a fix for it? Xmodmap seems to be totally ineffective, not that it likes evdev much anyway.

What does your input device section for your mouse look like? Here's mine:

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "usbmouse"
        Driver "evdev"
        Option "Protocol" "event"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/event2"
        Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
EndSection

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "MX1000"
        Driver "evdev"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mx1000"
        Option "Buttons" "12"
EndSection
I shall try using yours instead :-)

Xorg-server isn't working for me, and this is the infamous last line:

Code: Select all

waiting for X server to shutdown FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
i reemerged lots of fonts, used mkfontdir on the directory, plus some other things. As one person did, I emerged libXft - no such luck. I then also tried the Xfontserver and still no go.
Any ideas?

I get that line as well, but here xorg-server is working, so maybe the problem lies somewhere else ??

I would hazard a guess that the error is happening somewhere before the last line...
Look through /var/log/Xorg.0.log for lines starting in (EE) or (WW) - the fatal error is sometimes quite a long way before it bails out.

Any news on not being about to compile kde with xorg-server?

I've been watching the "[PATCH] Make kdebase stop looking for imake" Gentoo bugzilla entry, but there's been no activity for almost 2 months.

Only kdm is affected, everything else from KDE works here. I run KDE from svn, and I can compile kdm without imake (modify configure), but it wont start up so ... :?

I believe they wait for upstream to modularize imake.
And two days ago the build-things and symlinks where made in xorg-cvs, so I guess we will see result with the next RC (when that will be)...
...or if someone makes a CVS-snap before that (don't look at me, i know very little of such things).

Oh. I don't even use kdm. For some reason the stuff I read when I first looked into it made it sound much worse than that.

The patch there doesn't work? In that case try this patch instead, it does basically the same and worked fine for me.

Ah lol, the patches dont apply vs svn checkout of kdm, but I used one to create my own patch, but I forgot to change these 2 lines

Code: Select all

AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED(XBINDIR, "$XBINDIR", [X binaries directory])
AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED(XLIBDIR, "$XLIBDIR", [X libraries directory])
into

Code: Select all

AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED(XBINDIR, "/usr/bin", [X binaries directory])
AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED(XLIBDIR, "/usr/lib", [X libraries directory])
but even then it doesn't work, kdm doesn't pop up, but i can live without kdm ...

[edit] maybe its the same reason why xdm isnt working, who knows

ok, i went through my Xorg logs and i get two warnings that go like ***INVALID MEM ALLOCATION*** but that is it. Just a little fyi, the mouse cursor does show up for a split second, then the screen goes back to the terminal.

Now it seems i got it to work. I emerged the following:
libXaw libXpm twm xclock libXTrap libXrandr libXcomposite libXcursor libXv libXScrnSaver

btw, if anyone is has radeon mobility 9000, the xorg-server ati drivers work just fine for me :)

edit: fvwm2, fluxbox, xsession are working, but not gnome :/

Oh, I just assumed that there must be something wrong with the patch, because that bug entry hasn't been marked resolved. Now that I know it affects only kdm I don't care about it anymore anyway, because I use startx instead. Thanks anyway.

Tried revdep-rebuild?
Most of my problems came from missing libX*, and a simple

Code: Select all

revdep-rebuild -p | grep libX
gave me a nice little list over what libs programs expected to find.
