Sempron 64bit flags and kernel configuration

  • Quote

Post by qmic » Wed Aug 24, 2005 12:50 pm

I`ve bought Sempron 64bit, but i cannot install system on it. I`ve got kernel panic or something like that. What architecture should i use? K8/Opteron/Athlon64 or generic x86_64. I`ve tried both but i`ve got same kernel panic.
Maybe it is fault of wrong CFLAGS?
I`m using -march athlon64 -O2 -pipe is it correct? I can`t find documentation to see what settings should i use for this processor. Please help. I`m trying to compile kernel for about 5 hours.

I changed to this in my /etc/make.conf :

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -msse2"
and the only two things I changed in my kernel config are :

Code: Select all

CONFIG_MK8=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
I was previously using a stage3-athlon-xp-2005.0 install on a AthlonXP 1700+ and Nforce2 motherboard, all I did was swap in a Nforce3 board and Sempron64 then recompiled the kernel. I've had to recompile a few apps because things went a bit flakey but it seems stable just now.

I'm fairly certain that Sempron processors aren't 64 bit, the newer ones are Athlon64 processors with the 64bit instructions turned off (as well as having less cache.) Unless AMD came out with a new range of Sempron processors recently which I'm not yet aware of you will have to use the old k7 or athlon-xp arch on a Sempron.

Yes, but I seem to recall reading a tomshardware article that said that the Sempron64's have AMD's 64-bit extensions disabled, which is why they are so much cheaper and run so much cooler (namely, why I bought one). I'll be using the athlon-xp stage, since it's probably the closest to sempron64.

If u say so,but how can I installed the win xp x64 with my Sempron64.After reading so many topics,I still don't know how to set Sempron64's Kernel option & Gcc Option. (Just the two questions,don't tell me it's not a 64 bit processor,it is :cry: )

There has been a new Sempron revision released that indeed *IS* 64-bit and supports AMD64. The only difference between the *NEW* revision Sempron and the Athlon64 is that the Sempron still has less cache.

I believe they're called revision E6 or something like that. There's a black AMD64 sticker on the lower-right of the retail box of the new revision Semprons.

I'm afraid that some dealers are going to be selling them as 64-bit when they aren't since most users with Windows would never know the difference... be careful out there. Insist on the retail packaging... as a bonus to buying the retail package you get a qualified heatsink+fan for the processor and a 3-yr warranty directly from AMD.

As I'm working on shop, where I build most our boxes, I can tell that some mobos do not detect that Sempron processor correctly and that may lead to some wierd problems. Motherboard BIOS update resolves some of those issues.

I've got a Sempron 64 bits and i had differents problem to install Gentoo.
So, i confirm that a motherboard bios update resolves some problems like "kernel panic", "segmentation fault" and boot problem ("no boot device found" a thing like this) at the installation. I did the update and i've got no problem to install gentoo now :)

I suppose that -march=k8 CFLAG means you're on an AMD64 system.....Did u noticed any performance improvement doing so?
I know my 32-bit system is something like an hack..... (k8 support inside kernel) but's doin all
(alot compatible....)

Here you can find a list of safe CFLAGS: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags

I think for your AMD Sempron this Flags would be OK:

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
HTH

If you're going to install a 64-bit system then:

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe -fno-ident"
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
