lol

i do, now and then - it looks good, but takes a lot of cpu cycles. anyway, i haven't upgraded it lately, but it seems to work. its compiling now, and i don't use keepobj. if it doesn't work, you'll hear from me.

i wonder if we could have (some of the) excelent pertty patches for KDE for KDE 3.5... http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-23 ... art-0.html

I know it would be a lot of work, so considder this as just a suggestion :D if someone with some knowledge of coding feels up to the task...

It compiles now for me too. But how did you conclude that it takes a lot of cpu cycles?

well, eyecandy doesn't come for free. the algoritms to paint the baghira buttons simply have more to do compared to those that do plastik... you can see it when you open lots of tabs in konqueror, baghira takes a bit more time to open them compared to plastik or even lighter styles.

I did a larger update today and I noticed that some packages compiled fine, but failed miserably in the install stage:

Code: Select all

--snip--
No such file or directory
Error creating /var/tmp/portage/kmplayer-7/image//usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmplayer/common. Exit status 1.
/bin/install -c -p -m 644 /var/tmp/portage/kmplayer-7/work/trunk/extragear/multimedia/doc/kmplayer/index.docbook /var/tmp/portage/kmplayer-7/image//
usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmplayer/index.docbook

!!! ERROR: media-video/kmplayer-7 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_install, Line 200, Exitcode 1
!!! died running make install, kde_src_install:make
The packages that failed this way were: kmplayer, kdeaddons-docs-konq-plugins, akregator, ksplashml, kxkb, ksysguard (there may be others with the same simptoms).

Is this a problem with the svn repository?

Thanks,
Alin

No, dont think so, but try without unsermake. I had kdesu failing on me in install stage, but it installs fine with UNSERMAKE="no"

This seems to solve the problem.
Thanks!

Finished compiling most of KDE now, took the advantage of having a clean system to try and use the symbol visibility patch for QT and it seems to work well.

I think Ill commit updated qt with symbol_visibility useflag as well for your pleasure

just let me add: you're a god :D

i have a question, tough: i don't know much of the internals of portage or makescripts, but what are the problems, what causes them? and then i mean most of them. these things complaining about missing files etc, why are the files not there? what do you have to do to make them appear? and most of all, why is it a problem in the packages (altough this one is most likely answered by the answers on the above questions)?

Because not everybody uses the same build system, but a lot of them have to be supported. Although they are/were trying to focus on a single build system for KDE4, the 3.5 branch still has the problem that a developer usually employs a single build system, and tends to break stuff for the others from time to time ... That and the fact that automake & co aren't perfect either (unsermake was created as a response to those btw).

When files are missing, its usually not a big problem if you compile manually, since the make rules are usually there, you can just

Code: Select all

make header.h
make
and compilation goes on, but you see the problem in an automatic system. And this is as far as my knowledge on the subject goes ...

I haven't been able to compile some of the packages lately, e.g. amarok fails with the following strange looking error:

Code: Select all

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the reason for this?

I emerged amarok a couple of hours ago, with no problems.
You should run an emerge sync && gensync kde-live.

I have done that many times, doesn't help. I guess something is broken, just don't know what.
