I have tried Win4LinPro and found it was unusable on my system. However, Win4Lin is quite good, once installed. The installation is the trick.

Win4Lin does work on gentoo. Are you using a win4lin-enabled kernel?

People are getting it to work from what I've seen.
You may want to read into this THREAD.

The only problem I had was with loading the 2 modules. The kernel module mki-adapter and Win4Lin.ko located in /var/win4lin/drivers. The script would not load them properly until started during boot.

I used the vanilla kernel version 2.6.11 and applied the patches from the Win4Lin site. I haven't tried the onion-sources yet. It works for most things that don't require direct access to the hardware.

Whats performance like with win4lin? Is it faster or slower than VMware, or the same?

Can Win4lin do anything that VMware cant? What about games and directx or direct3d?

win4lin is good enough for programs that don't require direct access to the hardware. I suggest you try the demo versions of both. To get a demo license for win4lin you need to email support and request one. For win4linpro, there is a demo version, but I don't recommend that from my experience. VMWare has a demo version as well.

If you need to see how they work with a particular program, I suggest you download the demo and try it out. All of them require an OS cd or iso to install the VM. If you install windows you will need a license. Win4Lin is the trickiest installation.

In terms of cost, Win4Lin is cheapest, then Win4LinPro, and then VMWare.
