Alsamixer works, alsaconf doesn't.

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

This is a weird situation for me anyway...

I did my second install of Gentoo last night. Everything went perfectly, and then I established that I had no sound. I built alsa into the kernel, so I emerged alsa-utils and alsa-tools. I configured the volume in alsa mixer. Then I went to run alsaconf. There in came the problem, alsaconf couldn't detect a soundcard on the system. I'm sure there has to be a way to fix this, I'm just not sure how to go about it.

The card appears in my dmesg, lspci, and even in alsamixer. The only thing that doesn't realize it's there seems to be alsaconf.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is the model of the soundcard you have?

The only think I can think of would be to check that support for that card is compiled in the Kernel...

In order for alsaconf to work you have to compile the drivers as modules. Recompile them as modules, if you haven't already done so and try it again.

If that doesn't work you could also try to disable the drivers in the kernel entirely and emerge alsa-driver.

Well that makes sense. I kind of assumed I had to use it because all my programs were complaining about alsa not being configured. Anyway, I recompiled the kernel again (with no changes).. and now it works just fine. *shrugs*

Anyway, thanks for the info.
