bttv-878 not in kernel [not solved]

  • Quote

Post by wip » Tue Sep 06, 2005 1:31 pm

hi all! i don't understand something in kernel 2.6.x. i have a: 0000:02:0b.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture (rev 11) (actually it's an osprey 210 that is reported to be compatible with the bttv-878 driver. BUT, there is no option when i compile the kernel to put bttvdriver as module or in the kernel??? so i was browsing the web for downloading the bttv driver and found this page: http://linux.bytesex.org/v4l2/bttv.html but they say that this driver is allready included in 2.6 kernels.

1) what do i need to set for having bttv as module in the kernel?
2) what are the module to load to use /dev/video0?

thank you,
patrick

You need to enable I2C support and I2C bit-banging interfaces first, Device Drivers -> I2C support. After that you should be able to see "BT848 Video For Linux" under Device Drivers -> Multimedia devices -> Video For Linux.

are you using a bt878 capture card? so is this true that the driver has been replace with conexant driver? what do i need to modprobe for using my capture card? (lsmod please).

I have a Hauppauge WinTV card which has a bt878 chip. I don't compile the drivers as modules. The Conexant 2388x chip which you mentioned in a new thread has a module called cx8800.

For future reference, you can look up the name of the module by selecting "Help" while in make menuconfig.

cx8800 is not the driver for your bt878 card. Don't pay any attention to the "bt878 successor" in menuconfig. It's talking about the chips, not the drivers. The driver you want is bttv, and you don't need to download it. Just follow the instructions in lafiel's first reply. If it doesn't correctly autodetect your card after you modprobe bttv, look at CARDLIST.bttv and CARDLIST.tuner in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/ for values for the 'card' and 'tuner' parameters.

lafiel i'm sorry, i will always listen to you from now on :) so yes enabling BT848 fixed my problem i can use my osprey 210 bt878 capture card.

i have more questions about video4linux :

i know that we can set the size of the capture (320x240, 640x480) but what is the "real" size of my capture card. and how can i set tyhis size and channel at boot time? also can i deinterlace the capture frame on the fly (on the capture card or on the cpu?). can you give me some software to use to set / capture / enjoy my new capture card?

I believe what is confusing is that first of all the driver is termed BT848 (which also supports BT878).
And second it is only accessible under the Video for Linux API 1 (DEPRECATED) section.
And third when you scroll through the driver list and see 'bt878 successor' it gives you the impression that the code has been changed up to this driver for the new Video for Linux which you then assume means V4L2 instead of 'deprecated' V4L.

I hope someone adds/moves the code and maybe clears up the naming convention or adds a blurb about BT848-BT878 under the help.

I am using a Bt878 device.

I recompiled the Kernel to include the I2C and Bt878 modules as described above. When I reboot, it detects the Bt878 device.

However, it is not creating /dev/video0.

When I try modprobe bttv, I get:

Code: Select all

modprobe bttv

FATAL: Error inserting bttv (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/media/video/bt8xx/bttv.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
I tried dmesg and got:

I looked at the lists of devices and I think my device is a bttv 52 and a tuner 18. Where do I apply those with TVTime please?

I wonder if I should try a different frontend program? I suspect that I need to resolve those 'Unknown symbol' messages first.

Can anyone help please? :?

I think we are reaching the point where the 'Challenge' just becomes simple stubbornness.

I have now spent all my spare time for the last two weeks trying to get Gentoo to install and work properly.

After a week I had a text mode system working.

After a week and a half I had some graphics. Another day and I had Xfce4.

After two weeks I had KDE3.5

I still cannot get the TV card to work and ICAClient will not install because it only recognises an old version of the Client (I thought Gentoo was supposed to be updated automatically?). Both of these work fine on other Linux Distros, usually automatically detecting and configuring the TV card and sometimes the ICA Client as well.

Some things are good - the nVidia drivers were easy (once I persuaded Xorg to install at all), VirtualBox, Unrar and Pysol are in the Portage.

However, do we really need to fight for over two weeks to install a system which still is not complete? Any of the others would have been complete in an hour or so - even Slackware not much longer than that.

I really didn't want to let it beat me, but is it really worth it? :?

To end up with a clean, optimised system is all very well, even if it takes a lot longer to get there, but there seems no sign of actually getting there. It seems Gentoo is beyond me. I have been installing Linux since the days when all of them were installed like Slackware and some didn't even have graphics, but I still don't understand enough to make Gentoo work properly.

I will sleep on it and then maybe try the TV card once more. Then that Debian disk from the front of a recent magazine might just get a try.

Sorry guys - beating one's head against a brick wall is only fun for so long.

My first thought would be it must be that kernel version.
I would try another version.

I built a kernel that worked with the BT878 on x86 and If I'm not mistaken it was 2.6.22-r3.
Portage is very powerful so I wouldn't give up on it just yet. It's like anything else when you first try it, there's a learning curve.

You should be able to use this command:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r3

If that doesn't work you could use the ebuild command directly like:
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources/gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r3.ebuild fetch

The ebuild commands are as foillows:
# ebuild myebuild fetch (if you don't have it in /usr/portage/distfiles)
# ebuild myebuild unpack (unpacked to /var/tmp/portage/packagename/something)
# ebuild myebuild compile
# ebuild myebuild install
# ebuild myebuild qmerge

Handy to know that stuff when you want to install a gentoo package, but want to patch it or modify it first.

I think another thing you might want to look at and probably add are entries in /etc/modprobe.conf

something like:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
alias /dev/video0 bttv
options bttv card=2 tuner=2 radio=0

When it boots up you should be able to see it find the bt878 card in dmesg.
something like:

bttv: Bt8xx card found

bttv0: i2c: checking for MSP34xx @ 0x80... not found
bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA9875 @ 0xb0... not found
bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA7432 @ 0x8a... not found
bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA9887 @ 0x86... not found

etc etc

That should also help you determine what card and tuner it is seeing, etc.

:)

Thanks - I didn't know you could do that. I assumed the kernel that portage supplied was the only one you could use.

I will give that a try and see how it goes.

By the way, I tried booting the system with a live CD - the Gentoo one detected the card and the PCLinuxOS one ran TVTime successfully, so it is probably not the card.

As you say - a learning curve.

I assume the new kernel does not overwrite the existing one - just gives another choice at boot?

Edit - I just tried the PCLinuxOS live CD again, with the aerial cable plugged in and TVTime could not find any channels. The signal is fine, as it works on my other PC (Vista), so perhaps the TV Card is faulty. :?

However, I still have a problem with Gentoo not loading the card module correctly - which does work in the live CD, both with Gentoo and PCLinuxOS.

I think the other kernel is still worth a try - even if I do end up needing to buy another TV card.

OK, I downloaded the earlier kernel source and complied it. The first command worked thanks.

However, if I copy this to /boot/kernel, it will overwrite the existing one. Can I rename it to give both options?

If so, do I then have to redo my Grub settings? :?

Nighthawk4

This post tells how to set up grub for several kernels.
The bt8x8 module is still in modern kernels too, you need to enable Video For Linux (Depreciated) to see it.
The bt878 chip can support digital audio capture too, however, the feature was not implemented at all on some TV cards, is broken on others and works on a few. If you want to play with it there is a bt878 alsa module. Also read the documents in /usr/src/linux/Documents/... on the subject.

I have a multi-boot grub system now.

The first time it wouldn't load the graphics in the new option - I seem to have added the nVidia to the Kernel and then tried to load a module as well. Not sure how I did that. :?

The next time it seemed to go into graphical mode as it booted and then there was no display - might be a Framebuffer issue.

Still working on it.

Another problem - when I try to read removable media - like CDs or a USB drive - it detects the media, pops up the window asking me what I want to do, I select 'open in another window' and the window opens. It says the location of the media, but there are no files visible - as if the media was empty.

The CDs and USB drive are not empty and work fine on other systems. Any ideas please?

Also, winecfg does not seem to run in non-root mode, as the user does not have rights to /dev/nvidiactl and /dev/nvidia0. I did an SU and then chmod 666 to both of these (they were 660). Then winectl loads without complaint. However, I assume these rights will disappear when udev runs next time I reboot. Can I fix this please? Is there a group my user needs to be in for Wine?

Nighthawk4,

The nvidia device nodes should be

Code: Select all

$ ls /dev/nvi* -l
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 0 Sep 23 12:01 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 255 Sep 23 12:01 /dev/nvidiactl
and your users need to be in the video group.

Are you in the plugdev group ?
Thats needed for USB, I'm not sure about removable media

Already in the cdrom group, so not sure why I couldn't read the CDs. :?

Isn't this thread solved? If so, could you please mark is as [Solved]?

Anyway - it solved my problem - thanks.
