Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

automatic kernel configuration

I remember back while when I first installed gentoo, when I ran make menconfig to configure my kernel, it had used a default, somehow based on the loaded modules at the time. That is, I had a very good default to work from. Does anyone by any chance know how this is done? I guess there's a script doing this; but where is it?

I guess you used genkernel when you installed gentoo for the first time.
Genkernel builds a modular kernel including support for almost any type of hardware but sometimes messes up things. Therefore, it is far much better to compile your kernel manually.
cheers!

Actually, that's what I didn't do. I just emerged kernel sources (probably gentoo-sources-development, at that time), and ran make menuconfig. But it had really good defaults set for my particular machine... I just came to think of it recently and thought it must have been a pretty nifty script that accomplished that :)

Hi.
There is no script behind it. The architecture specific (or device specific) parts have some good default values already in the individual Konfig files. You may have a look in some of them :-)

Cheers, R.
