modprobe what for silicon image

Post by vf1sveritech » Thu Aug 18, 2005 7:05 am

simple but important question: what do i modprobe for a silicon image chipset ide controller card? i have it set as a module in my kernel, when i had it built into my kernel i would get a kernel panic because the root drive couldnt be found, so its set as a module, now i just need to have it load the module and have no idea what its called, so if you know, that would be great, thanks.

How do you want to load the module if the kernel has already paniced?

Compile is statically into the kernel! ;-)

....I originally had it as * but that caused the kernel to panic so i recompiled the kernel using M instead. now i need to load the module with modprobe or add it to the module autostart file. for example, my network card needs 'modprobe via-rhine' for it to work, of course i have it in that file so i dont need to type it. But since i dont know what Silicon Image module is called, i cant modprobe it, therefore i need the name

Modules are looked for on the harddisk, which is connected to the silicon image controller.

So, you cannot load the module before kernel knows how to access the harddisk, which is through the controller.

You probably have another error, maybe missing filesystem support.

Please post the exact error message.

Not sure about it, but try "modprobe siimage".

To know all the modules you have, you can run:

Code: Select all

find /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/ -name "*.ko"

If you read the help section of the silicon image support in your kernel configuration program (menuconfig), it should give you the name of the module.

make sure you enable the silicon image driver under scsi controllers, the one under ata is deprecated. once you have it built as a module, modprobe sil_sata

Is your recommendation (sil_sata) valid for ata drives as well?

I'll try it tonight.
