Kernel selection

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Kernel selection

Do i have an option of kernals to install or am i stuck with the one from genkernel?

This now the 5th time installing this damn OS and each time, despite having followed the install docs to the T, It always fails when i reboot.

Followed all the issues with the lilo, which i was using but am now going to try GRUB. Also, is there a definitive answer on the subject of having to use initrd=initramfs and root =/dev/hdb or root=/dev/ram0

Thanx.

Also, is it really neccessary to have a / and a /boot partition? couldnt i just have a / part. and make it a little easier?

You can always build your own kernel. Just follow the steps in the install docs.

Code: Select all

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
<select what you want compiled into your kernel>
make && make modules_install
cp <location of bzImage> /boot/whatever-you-want-to-call-it
cp System.map /boot/System.map-whatever
Then you'll have to change your grub entry.

There are also many other kernels than the default gentoo-sources.
Here is a list of the ones in portage: http://www.gentoo-portage.com/sys-kernel

Simply emerge them, make a link

Code: Select all

rm /usr/src/linux
ln -s /usr/src/<name of kernel source dir> /usr/src/linux
And follow the steps above.

thanx for the speedy reply, just REAllY frustrated at this point but i refuse to let this thing beat me.

Also, is it really neccessary to have a / and a /boot partition? couldnt i just have a / part. and make it a little easier?

My problem is one that has to do with the kernel panic, vfs not sync, unable to mount rfs on unknown block (1,0). everything ive read about this serves up no def. answer to the solution whis is why i mentioned the root=/dev/ram0 thing.

thanx

Ha.

I did something similar once. I was setting setting up to use the windows bootloader to boot gentoo and instead of copying my boot sector to my fat partition that I created with the intent of using it as a tranfser point for files I wanted to access in both os's I accidentaly copied it to my windows partition. NOT GOOD.

So yeah, how did that work out for you?
