Use XFCE? What apps could you not live without?

I just got into gentoo and I'm using XFCE. I'd like to know what all your favourite applications are that work well with XFCE and dont pull in tons of gnome or kde dependencies. Everything from filemanagers to media players and system monitors, what could you not live without?

of course rox file manager. I love the tab completion along with a gui, I don't use the desktop, although you could if you want a desktop with xfce4

I was a long-time Xfce user before switching to GNOME, so here's my list:

xfce-extra/xfce4-diskperf: A disk I/O monitor (panel applet)
xfce-extra/xfce4-systemload: A CPU/RAM/Swap/uptime monitor (panel applet)
x11-terms/rxvt-unicode: A fast and good-looking terminal with support for Unicode (UTF-8, etc.) and, optionally, tabs .
rox-base/rox: Rox is a light desktop environment but in its default mode you can use it as a simple and highly configurable file manager

Cheers.

Must be a noob question, but I can't seem to find gmplayer. :-) I find mplayer ofcourse and kmplayer frontend for KDE. I enabled the gtk use flag for mplayer but I don't seem to have a gmplayer program. :-) I hope you can help me.

I have torsmo running fine with XFCE4,was so much changed that it doesn't work anymore, because I was thinking about switching shortly.
That rank under my username doesn't mean I know everything, it just means I ask a lot of questions.

I got it working, finally, had to set the time-delay at 7seconds. But now it works, so I'm not complaining :D

Put this in your .xinitrc:

Code: Select all

exec startxfce4 & wmpid=$!
sleep 5s
conky &
wait $wmpid
You may have to change the delay to a higher value if it doesn't show, or lower if it takes to long

Hmm, that's weird. Does it start if you run conky from the terminal?

Yep runs fine from console, using it now.

Ok, and there's no typos in .xinitrc or so? If not, do you have any WM that you know conky starts up with?
Haven't had this problem myself though, so it's a bit tricky to find out what's causing the problem, but you could ask here. Since this guy built conky, he might know

I'm now hooked on wxMusik. There used to not be a good Gtk2 Rhythmbox-style player that wouldn't drag in all the Gnome deps (and could handle 10k+ FLACs). Now there's an ebuild in Bugzilla that works fine and I'm not turning back.
