eth0 is there.... but no luck getting a connection

So, I'm trying to get a spare computer connected and its not going so well.

I bought a cheap card at wal-mart and got started installing.

card:Network Everywhere
model number: NC100U-WM

Now, eth0 is there, but dhcpcd does nothing but fail. I've taken the connection from the cable modem for this computer and plugged it in and copied my ifconfig, route table, and resolv.conf exactly as it is on this computer but still i get nothing.

Any ideas? Any help appreciated.

Does a 3rd computer work? perhaps your modem only serves 1 IP.

Well, there are only two computers, but what I'm saying is I disconnected from the first computer and hooked directly to the second.

[edit] Also if it means anything I have tried booting several LiveCD's and none can provide me a working internet connection it seems [edit]

Okay. Did you try manually running "ifconfig" with the settings of the compute rthat works, and pinging your modem? Don't worry about resolv.conf and setting your gateway until you can actually ping your gateway.

the last couple times i installed gentoo, after the installation was complete i had to bot backup into the livecd and mount everything, chroot, and hten emerge dhcpcd. then everything worked fine. maybe try that?

edit: or if you can get it working by directlyp lugging it int the modem do that and emerge dhcpcd.

I was actually trying to finish the install without the network and worry about it later but the cd won't eject to allow me to use the packages cd. One way or another I've got to get that modem working, no luck so far though. I think maybe I'll take that card out of that computer and put it in this one to see if it works on a fully installed system.

If you have a spare network card you might want to connect the internet to your normal computer and the new one to that. That should work.

Not sure I get what you mean.
Care to explain further?

I was going to give another old card I have a try, its an Intel 8/16 Lan Adapter... yes ISA. Anyone have any idea what driver module might make this function?

[edit] Okay I see what you meant, use this computer as the host and share the connection that way. Yeah, but the only other card I have here is that isa card, if I can get that to work thats fine with me. [edit]

OK This is REALLY pissing me off.

So, the driver for my old Intel ISA card is "eexpress". I can get that far, but I have the same problem after that. Dhcpcd soes nothing, nor can i ping my modem. How freakin stupid is this?
I've been using the puppy LiveCD for the last few things I did, it now reports eth0(linksys) and eth1(intel) and the drivers tulip(linksys) and eexpress(intel).

It just doesn't make sense to me.

Any ideas? :(

OKAY, so anyway the problem ended up being that my isp uses a mac address verification. So end of story I had to spoof the mac address to get the damn thing to work.

No. Thats why I was having problems. Couldn't ping it because it won't reply to any mac address other than the one initially used when it was set up. Same with dhcp, it will only respond to the correct nic. You can call them to have them register your new mac addr., but that's only if you get someone who has a clue what the hell they're talking about. When I called them they actually referred me to a second number which ended up being some sub-contractor they use 75 miles from where I live who obviously wasn't eager to assist me since I wasn't a costumer in their service area. Another satisfied customer.

I've come to expect it from them. And they are no small company either. Oh well, the connection speed is never questionable and the price is right. So waht if "technical support" is just a room full of trained monkeys.
