Gentoo and Lightscribe?

I was wondering if there is Linux support for lightscribe drives. I am considering buying one. And what about software to design lightscribe labels?

If this is not possible, will Linux at least recognize the dvd/cd-writing capabilities of the drive? I might dual boot with Windows XP, so I can still make lightscribe labels.

Their FAQ says there are lightscribe drives for Macintosh, so it's quite possible that linux will support them, someday. Just not now.

I'd like an answer to this last question. I think it's yes, but I can't take the risk of ending up with a drive that Linux can't use at all for the next couple of months (years?)

I'm thinking of buying this one.

I'm thinking of getting a Lightscribe drive as well. Right now I'm deciding between the Benq and HP models. From what I understand, then K3B plans on supporting it, but I've no idea on what (if any) progress was made, or when it will be released.

Would nero4Linux support lightscribe? Nero 6 for windows supports it, so the linux version might as well.

I doubt it and honestly why pay for an ugly hack of an app that is non-GPL (meaning Nero for Linux) when there is GPL software out there to burn with? I'd wait and get the drive when someone has GPL/free software that runs it. I doubt it will take long for people to get it working with GPLed software.

I agree

I just figured that since Nero 6 does support it, then neroLinux might as well (from what I gather it doesn't though). Combined with the fact that many burner come with a copy of nero, then you'd be able to run a legit copy.... at least until something better comes out.

From what I understood, if you bought Nero 6 for Windows, then you could get Nero for Linux for free....

If you received Nero 6 with you DVD burner, then it should allow you to also use the Linux version. This is the only reason, why I even considered using that program..... but it won't help you much, because as of the moment it doesn't have lightscribe support yet.

I took the plunge and bought one.
Works like a charm! Didn't need to configure anything, kernel figured out it was a DVD writer, on first boot!
Make sure you have all the dvd writing packages installed, and I'm not sure if it's nessecary but I also have packet writing compiled into my kernel.
It won't be long until someone figures out how to get a lightscribe drive to actually burn the picture under linux, and I'm considering giving it a shot under Win4Lin to see if that will work in the meantime.

*update*
Hmm looking under kde's configuration tool is showing a new device that seems to look almost like a printer!
I wonder if thats the ticket right there.
I'm going to go to Walmart and try to find some lightscribe media, then see if I can set this new "printer" up!

Ok, the new printer looking thing turned out to simply be present due to the fact that I had to do a recompile on my kernel the night before, and while adding DVD Packet Writing I also added PnP Bios and SuperIO support.
In short, it's the printer I already had hooked up before, but never successfully configured (I think it may have an issue somewhere in it's firmware, but thats a story for another day)

So back to square one, I hope some smart Linuxer or Gentooer gets this whole LightScribe thing figured out, or LightScribe releases a Linux Driver or something.

Anyways sorry for the red herring, however the drive does make very nice DVD's really fast.

How did you get the DVD burner itself to work? I bought the HP 640C and I can access DVDs, burn CDs, but when I try to burn a dvd it always fails...

Not sure if it makes any difference but I added the kernel mode drivers, including packet writing and recompiled my kernel.
One wierd thing though and this may just be my external player, is that the DVD's after being written only seem to be readable on my computer, this could however be due to the fact that I have a $49.00 walmart special Apex dvd player.

hmmm.....

I had packet writing enabled as a module, so I loaded it and the burn process didn't even start when I tried to burn the same dvd image

I've heard that if you try to burn a movie to a DVD+R then older DVD players won't be able to play them. Maybe the same can be said of cheap ones?

Ok, yeah that makes sense they probably have used the older hardware to make the Walmart special.
Incidently my KDE is 3.4+ I noticed yours is alot older, I dunno but maybe thats the issue.

Could be..... I just didn't feel like spending a day recompiling the new version, I just want to make backups of my stuff so that I can reinstall Gentoo again. I'll try getting a different burning program and seeing if that helps. Maybe the NeroLinux test version is good for something after all.....

I think the problem why I can't burn with K3B is due to the fact that K3B isn't playing well with my version of dvd+rw-tools. I installed tkdvd and I was getting the same problem. I updated tkdvd and the problem went away.... I might try installing an older version of dvd+rw-tools tommorow and try it with K3B to test my theory, but for now I'm happy that I can finally use my dvd burner.

I had this problem when the permissions didn't allow tmp files to be created. I debug'd it by running the growfs command on the command line. K3b also doesn't dvdrtools. I put them both on. I hope lightscribe works.

I've bought lightscribe driver, simply becaouse it have cost me 2$ more than one without lightscribe would

And while I may burn dvd's properly, I don't have any idea how to label it. I'm a bit angry on that issue.
