Login produces errors

Post by drgenius87 » Wed Aug 03, 2005 8:42 pm

I haven't really done anything since it was working except for an emerge sync and emerge -av world, and well ever since then whenever I log in as any user I get all these errors popping up at me.

Code: Select all

configuration error - unknown item 'FAILLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'LASTLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'MOTD_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'FTMP_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_PATH' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_ROOTPATH' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_SUPATH' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'PASS_MIN_LEN' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'CHFN_AUTH' (notify administrator)

Any ideas?

I mean, after i login and get all these errors, I can resume normal activity, startx and emerge still work, everything is smooth, I just don't like seeing those errors fly all over the place, practically fills the screen in console. Just nasty.

Similar errors here; don't know why, but you have to delete /etc/login.defs (backup first) and then reemerge pam-login.

Works for me!

Did you do etc-update after emerge -av world? I think that etc/login.defs has changed syntax. I had the same error message until I did an etc-update, which included /etc/login.defs and /etc/pam.d/login

it's strange, I know that the config files in /etc are "protected" until you do etc-update, but in this case etc/login.defs seems simply ignored, and it is not overwritten by reemerging pam-login.

It would be also interesting to know why the update of baselayout affected pam-login...

Do you have this file in /etc folder ._cfg0000_login.defs
If so, all you need to do is rename this to login.defs and the error messages will go away. the problem is a syntax change in the new login.defs so you need to remove the old login.defs or downgrade shadow like suggested in the link MrSlayer provided.

No, I don't have such file, and this is the real problem... etc-update can't do its work this time, but in the end it's a really small problem.

Thank you all!

Remove /etc/login.devfs, then re emerge pam-login ant it will make a new one, correct. Now the errors are gone, but some of my commands are missing till i make

Code: Select all

source /etc/profile
. Any ideas about that?

Seems that the latest updates of baselayout, pam-login, shadow, were a little disaster:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101047
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101282
etc...

and now:

Code: Select all

francesco@gentoo ~ $ sudo emerge -puv system

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating system dependencies ...done!
[ebuild UD] sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.13 [1.12.0_pre3-r2] -bootstrap -build -static +unicode 0 kB
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/shadow-4.0.11.1-r2 [4.0.11.1] +nls -nousuid +pam (-selinux) -skey 0 kB
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/pam-login-4.0.11.1-r2 [4.0.11.1-r1] -livecd +nls (-selinux) 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB
francesco@gentoo ~ $
I hope this will fix all things... 8O

I had something strange thing too.
I don't know what caused it, but all of a sudden at the bottom of the file login.defs following line was written:

Code: Select all

PASS_MIN_LEN 5
Apparently this is not/no longer supported because it gives an error while logging on (unknown item 'PASS_MIN_LEN') ?
I renamed the file and I did a reemerge and now it's no longer there...
