Hey plbe... your theming skills would be a great enrichment for E17. Your fluxbox themes are very nice...

Hope you find some tutorial... :-)

Thanks, glad you like them. As soon as I find a howto for theming first one on my list is my europa flux theme(my favorite) of course modified for e17

EDIT: well i found a tutorial kinda anyway, not exactly descriptive, basically just telling me to find another theme and edit it oh well I'll give it a try.......wish me luck

I tried that too... "decompiling" existing themes. But my motivation wasn't the biggest. ;-)

IIRC, vandango startet a themeing wiki on get-e.org sometime, but i don't find it anymore. :-(

I just started using E17 yesterday and its acutally faster than both fluxbox and e dr16. I'm really enjoying it.

I got a theme installed from get-e.org but i can't figure out how to use the icons or edit my menus. I have a nice eterm config that i have been using the past 2 years but can't figure out how to get them into my eterm exec string. for another example would be the auto launch for openoffice, i mine is openoffice-bin but it trying to launch openoffice ..... Anyone got a link on howto?

2nd thing i'm having trouble with is using the icon packs from get-e.org .. do i just put the icons i want to use into the /applications/bar directory ?

For eg i downloaded the crystal icon pack, but i have no idea where to put them, i put them in ~/.e/e/icons/iconsetname but i can't figure out what to do with them from there to make e find them

i hope the grammar isn't too bad i'm working on 2 hours sleep ..... 8O

plbe: come join #get-e on freenode. Some of us over there are working on themes so we could share the info.

fuhreal: eaps go into ~/.e/e/applications/all . The guide is on get-e.org . There's a couple ways of getting the exe strings into the eaps (all explained on get-e.org). If you want to add icons to your menus and ibar you'll need to edit your /applications/favorites/.order (for menu) and /applications/bar/.order (for ibar) files. This is also explained on get-e.org.

Can anyone confirm if

Code: Select all

enlightenment_remote -focus-setting-set "NEW_WINDOW"
works anymore? I updated e17 today, and the above setting no longer seems to work :(
I also tried removing my ~/.e
TIA

There are no real tutorials available right now, the only way to learn is to decompile themes and look at the .edc code and the images they contain. There is very little documentation at this point - will all be fixed, eventually though. Private message me your email address btw, I could send you a small IRC log about E17 theming, that you might find useful.

If anyone would like to see the progress I'm making with my theme, you could take a look at the latest screenie. I know things are barely readable with the background, but that bg is very siutable for showing off the themes transparency. Also please note that it's the latest screenie which will change anytime I make a change. So far there are only clock (it's finished) and the start button (I'm not happy with it as it is now).

We could also start a thread on E17 theming or even open up an IRC channel someplace.

Themers are rare. I don't think anyone minds even if this thread (or #get-e) is used just for theming talk :)

Hehe... could get messy tho. And a thread could reel in some potential themers. Or simply people that would like to just alter existing themes (like Jas_Nix :P ).

has anyone tried to re-compile e17 today? I've found engage and e_modules are not compiling at the moment....

Kryten : 68250? But sir, surely that's impossible without at least one live chicken and Rabbi?!

Java (swing) not showing

Post by blair1 » Tue Jul 26, 2005 3:43 pm

Hi:

I'm worndering if anyone has gotten Java applications to work under e17. In particular, I use JabRef [gentoo-portage.com]. The application initially shows the splash screen (284 KB) [imageshack.us], but shows a blank window when loaded (Intial startup (260 KB) and expanded (91 KB)).

I've had JabRef working in both KDE3.4 and Gnome. I've also included the 'java' USE flag.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

I just got E17 running for the First time on Gentoo thanks to Q-collective's script [Bows down before Q's 1337ness] but I still can't get Engage to compile even when I do it manually. Here is the error I get on make

All of my Cflags are the default settings the only thing is I run amd64 could that be the problem? I haven't taken the time to recompile everything either I just got it to run 2am tuesday of this week.

Yes, java is a little broken when you run java apps under e17. I have the same troubles with azureus. Personally I run a vnc server on my machine, run a vncviewer window in e17, start a different window manager inside it and run Azureus inside that. Works for me.

Some java apps run fine, other don't.

If you want to see how bad this java thing is, take a peek in e17/apps/e/src/bin/e_hints.c and e_border.c to see raster's unhappiness with java.

I've been fiddling about with e17 on my extra linux box for a while and think it's pretty impressive (too bad my attempts at compiling engage and evidence have failed, oh well, it's cvs, I'll try later). Having such a different interface from KDE, Gnome and Xfce4 is certainly refreshing. I'm considering using it full time, but there are still a few things I'm waiting to check out.

Right now, although it may seem a tad trivial, I really wish I could use desktop scrolling like I currently do in Xfce4. Is there some way to modify the keybindings to allow for this?

Also, another minor annoyance is how firefox tends maximize over the bar and pager and take over the entire screen. Is there a way to establish margins so that firefox and other programs leave room to access engage/ibar and the pager?

Last question: the cursor: is the default e cursor the only one allowed on the desktop itself? My cursor seems to switch in and out of the e17 gold cursor and cursor specified in .Xdefaults when entering firefox or other such programs.

Thanks for any help provided. E17 is a really impressive piece of software.

Wonderful! It is really usable now, and really fast :D

That is something even I have tried, but I have failed to achieve it. Perhaps it is not supported yet.

Try

Code: Select all

enlightenment_remote -maximize-policy-set SMART

You can change your cursor hand by creating a ~/.e/e/images/pointer.png with the image of a mouse pointer of your choice.

Or you could use Xnest, which is pretty easy to setup. The only java app that I use (Azureus), works fine here though. At least I haven't noticed anything odd running it under E17.
