can play wav/au files, no mp3 or sound in quake3

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Ok... this is very bizarre.
For some reason, all of a sudden I have no sound in quake 3, or via xmms... I am using the default OSS drivers, because I was unable to get ALSA working. Quake 3 spams the following message "Dropping Sound" when I try to play... the wierd thing is, Gaim plays sound files when I get IM's and ICQ messages. I recently patched my kernel to get framebuffer support, but it was working since then...

I wasn't able to get my SB 64 ISA to work with ALSA, unfortunately... so I used the default: anyone else ever seen anything like this?

Code: Select all

r2d2 root # lsmod
Module Size Used by Tainted: P
smbfs 44728 1 (autoclean)
sb 7700 1
sb_lib 41070 0 [sb]
uart401 7204 0 [sb_lib]
sound 68372 1 [sb_lib uart401]
soundcore 4004 5 [sb_lib sound]
NVdriver 1067328 10
dmfe 14753 1
UPDATE:
Ok... I am getting a message in my /var/kern.log stating the following when I try to play any sounds:

Code: Select all

Mar 26 21:02:51 r2d2 Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?
I wonder... how do I enable DMA buffers with the sound.o driver? would I make a /etc/modules.d/sound file with some kind of option in it?

don't read the above post: stupidity is contagious :)
I was tooling around in my bios and had enabled "plug and play os"... don't ask me why... I disabled this feature and it now works...
