Hello, need a bit help getting my wireless nic setup.

Specs

Proxim - Orinico Gold 11.b/g
Kernel = 2.6.12-gentoo-r4

Have compiled wireless stuff into kernel.

lspci =

Code: Select all

0000:02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
Have emerge:

madwifi-driver
kismet

Have configured kismet

When inserted card power light flashes.

running kismet i get:

Code: Select all

 # kismet
Server options: none
Client options: none
Starting server...
Waiting for server to start before starting UI...
Will drop privs to michael (1000) gid 442
No specific sources given to be enabled, all will be enabled.
Enabling channel hopping.
Enabling channel splitting.
Source 0 (Atheros): Enabling monitor mode for madwifi_g source interface ath0 channel 6...
FATAL: GetIFFlags: interface ath0: No such device
i have done:

Code: Select all

 cp net.eth0 to net.ath0
I have an onboard nic that runs on eth0.

I think i need to do something to /etc/rc.conf/net but not sure what?

I don't currently have a home wireless point, though hope to in few weeks, this said i was hoping to do a bit wardriving to check email etc on the move.

any pointers?

Have done search but not found anything clear and concise to help out.

cheers

ok. i dont use gentoo on my laptop, but i do have an orinocco silver that i run under linux. so a couple of things..

-- does the iface come up when you do ifconfig ehtN up|down? you didnt mention.
-- are you using the patched drivers that allow for monitor mode? kismet/airtraf/airsnort requires this. apparently the orinocco drivers versins >= .15 no longer need this patch. [see below]
-- if you run lsmod, do you see the driver 'orinoco_cs' loaded?
-- you may need to update/install firmware for the card. [ i have to do this for the intel 2200bg card that i have ]
-- you may need to actually emerge the drivers.

Code: Select all

root@axis nex # emerge search orinoco*

Thanks for reply, although it is marked as orinico i believe that it uses Atheros driver, i am uses madwifi-driver so should not need to emerge orinico drivers!

Code: Select all

# lsmod

Code: Select all

 # ifconfig

Ok when i insert card i find following in /var/log/messages which indicates that it may be working but as i don't have an access point it fails?

How can i get it to go into monitor mode if this is the case?

Code: Select all

ok I think I might be able to help. Here are the steps to put a WNIC into monitor mode using the MADWifi driver:

Code: Select all

# iwpriv ath0 mode 2 <- (puts card into 802.11b only mode)
# iwconfig ath0 mode Monitor channel 6 <- (enter desired channel: 1-11. example sets to channel 6)
# ifconfig ath0 up
Thats it. The first option sets the card to sniff 802.11b traffic, the default (no need to set) is mode 1 (b/g), mode 3 is 802.11g only. I showed you "b only" mode because most AP's are using b and most wardriving programs wont work with the other modes you will have to try your luck. Also, you will pick up mixed b/g networks in mode 2.

As far as your code snippets from kismet. It looks as though you didnt setup your /etc/kismet.conf. You should set it up for your card, they provide an example and the readme details the options. It is pretty straight forward. When using kismet you do not need to use the above mentioned steps to put the card into monitor mode. Kismet does all of that for you. Just configure kismet using the conf file and kismet ddoes thte rest.

Hope this helps.

Ok i have now moved house and have decided to get this up and running :)

Well it is up and running .. sort of :)

If i fire up kimet as root in user dir it works and find my AP plus one other, kismet does not work if start as user, is this right?

So have established that card is working and finding AP, trouble is how do i get connect to even my own AP?

Set is thus:

Code: Select all

Main network

Cable modem - smoothwall firewall/dhcp/proxy etc - switch serving downstairs plus cable to upstairs switch which serves upstairs

Network IP

smoothwall
green 192.168.1.1
orange 192.168.0.1

Hard wired PC on network mostly have perm IP but couple use dhcp

For testing i have connected access point to upstairs switch and set AP IP as 192.168.1.20, if i can get things working i will move it to smoothwall orange with IP 192.168.0.2

Settings on netbook with wireless card

Code: Select all

/etc/conf.d/net
iface_eth0="192.168.1.6 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"

iface_ath0="192.168.1.6 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"

gateway="eth0/192.168.1.1"
also

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/net.ath0 start
Caching service dependencies ...
Starting ath0
Configuring wireless network for ath0
coundn't associate with any access points on ath0
failed to configure wireless for ath0
AP Netgear WG302UK settings

Code: Select all

wireless is on
operating mode set to auto 11/b/g
Authentication is set to WPA2-PSK
Pre shared key is 64 characters long
dhcp server is off

As far as i tell there are two issues, first is connecting to my own network nice and safely, second is being able to do bit of wardriving when on the move.

Any ideas where i am going wrong?
