on my machine 6629 doesnt work and I guess inter_module_get got deprecated to 6111 is unusable too. 6629 was a little more promissing as it actually _loads_ the module but then the thing everyone describes happens; I get the 1 pixel high, about 25-50 pixels acrossed portion of displayed X in the top left corner, the rest grey like it still is loading, and I also get a pointer I can move around IN THE PORTION OF THE SCREEN THAT IS GREYED OUT

there has to be something were not catching.... xorg.0.log looks perfect AGH!! guess im stuck until release after 7167 comes out. BTW: I loath not using renderaccel :-[

So switch to a non-mm based kernel. Try ck-sources. My 1.0.6111 will compile just fine on it, and ck is almost as responsive as love.

so either ck has inter_module_get or there's a patch in your ebuild that fixes it? if so which patch? maybe also ck has a patch to enable inter_module_get something from http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/4/13/130 ? if so which patch is this?

edit: because I done know about everyone else but my problems werent mm I think, I think I couldnt use 6111 after 2.6.11 (i think) which is also I think when they deprecated inter_module_get and its the only error I get now is that inter_module_get; There might be more after that, but I have found you fix the first problem before the second?? if i'm wrong could you explain what the problem is in more detail (why you wrote the agp back) Im not trying to be rude I just dont understand, and I <3 love sources so having a problem like no transparency and no font smooting acceleration can wait until nvidia fixes their stuf. It is worth it however up until that point to try to get it to work haha!

I also have the "inter_module_get" problem with gentoo-sources-2.6.12.

Is there any solution?

Only v6111 works stable on my Toshiba Tecra M2.

could someone describe what circumstances would require the 6111 driver?

I have a nvidia geforce go 5200, and I just reinstalled gentoo and x. I am having to use the "nv" drivers, because x is no longer satisfied with the hsync, vrefresh, and modeline that I usually give to it. I have no idea why x isn't cooperating. would the 6111 driver solve my problem?

The latest nvidia-driver is running stable now on my centrino notebook ;)

I don't need v6111 any more.

The solution was to disable SMP on my centrino.
I can't remember why I had enabled it!

the latest nv kernel - 7174 and 7667 or whatever DONT DO RenderAccell. And on kernels > 2.6.12 you cant use 6111 (inter_module_*) which does renderaccell. Were left with 6629 which works with some nv cards, not mine though. So basically Im screwed without renderaccell now. gg bye.

Er, yes - don't use 2.6.12?
I'm still using 2.6.9 as my main kernel, and occasionaly 2.6.11-hardened. Why upgrade?

Upgrading to a more recent kernel like 2.6.12 will get you possible updates to you existing drivers providing for better performance and better memory management(which I have noticed). Yet all of these enhancement are need to be confirmed my your own investigation of possible improvments?

If you're using those specific drivers, otherwise not.

Not true in the general case. 2.6.10 and 2.6.11 were crappy in that respect, which is what 2.6.12 tends to alleviate. They all still perform worse than 2.6.9, including 2.6.12. Run a benchmark. And stick to tried and tested stuff, unless you really like breakage, in which case you shouldn't be surprised that stuff doesn't work anymore.

Has anybody managed to get this 6111 driver working with 2.6.13-rc1? I am getting the error "screens fount, but no usable configuration" and before: failed to initialize kernel module.

The nteresting thing is, I installed latest NVidia driver, started X, quit X, installed 6111 and then it worked. Now after a reboot no go again. :-/

Any idea?

(BTW, for the inter module stuff I did a quick bit of hacking which worked ti 2.6.12.)

What was the output of dmesg? Especially the end. Dmesg usually gives more meaningful information than just modprobe.
(BTW, for the inter module stuff I did a quick bit of hacking which worked ti 2.6.12.)
I'd be really interested to know how you got the inter_module thing fixed. I jumped to 6629 cause I couldn't get 6111 to work, no matter how I tried. I can't get console to work after resuming, however, so I'd really like to go back to 6111.

Or did you mean 6111 worked until 2.6.12?

In fact I haven't found anything interesting in dmesg or Xorg.0.log, IIRC. I went back to 2.6.12.

Here is the hack I am using. Beware that this will break if you have agpgart loaded!!!

[note: I couldn't get the overlay from this thread to work, so I'm using the normal files one portage and just adding this patch into the ebuild. I'm assuming you know how to use a local portage overlay.]

Easiest is to copy the nvidia-kernel directory from the normal portage overlay to a local one. Then save the above patch as a file, call it "inter_module_fix.patch", or whatever you like.

Copy the file to nvidia-kernel/files/1.0.6111/

Edit the nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3.ebuild, and add "epatch ${FILESDIR}/${PV}/inter_module_fix.patch" to where all the other patches are handled (between lines 99-108 look fine)

Do an 'ebuild nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3.ebuild digest'.

Emerge nvidia-kernel, and check that the new patch is applied.

Remember that you should have AGPGART disabled in your kernel.

The end.

In fact I'd advise *not* to use the thread starter's patch, as it destabilizes for me. YMMV, though. I have no need for it; just my hack is needed and I have a very stable system now.

This method just does not work for me :(
When I try to re-emerge the nvidia-kernel I get the following messages:

Is your /usr/src/linux pointing at your kernel sources? Also, you could try

It has solved this error for some people.

Yes the /usr/src/linux symlink is right and it worked up to 2.6.11-rx.
"-sanbox" did not solve the problem...

Sorry. I really don't know anything about these things. Those were just the two things that popped out from google first.

You wouldn't have AGPGART enabled in kernel, would you? Other than that, I really have no idea...:(

Except "CONFIG_AGP=y" and "CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y" (for floppy) I cannot find something containing "AGP" in my kernel config file.

It's both. Either change both to "is not set", or remove them through menuconfig (Device Drivers -> Character Devices -> /dev/agpgart). Remember to rebuild your kernel and reboot with it, otherwise modprobe will fail.

This nvidia patch removes the part that checks for AGP in the kernel, and that's why the emerge failed, I guess. Kernel AGP and nvidia have been incompatible since 2.6.11 with ck patches, it seems.

By the way, "CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y" is for intel's graphics card, so you wouldn't need it anyway.
