!!! ERROR: dev-lang/perl-5.8.7 failed. [Solved]

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

I'm getting the following error when emerging perl (doing emerge -u system).

Can someone suggest why this may be happening (and what to do to fix)?

I have tried emerging libperl no problems there but still unable to emerge perl.

Code: Select all

......
`sh  cflags "optimize='-march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -O2'" perlmain.o` -fPIC perlmain.c
          CCCMD =  gcc -DPERL_CORE -c -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -O2  -Wall

OK thanks

added -fno-stack-protector to CFLAGS.

perl compiled OK, removed -fno-stack-protector and completed emerge -u world.

(Note to self: search http://bugs.gentoo.org/ as well as forums!)

But does that really solve the problem? Unless it is a bug in the stack protector code, it must be highlighting a problem in miniperl. It is like having a problem that switching on a particular electrical appliance always causes the fuse to blow and 'fixing' it by replacing the fuse with heavy gauge wire. If a safety device 'trips', disabling the safety device is not really a very good way of fixing the problem.

Quite correct! Although to use your analogy I am using an appliance which has the "fuse-blowing" feature disabled.

However as a bug has been filed, I imagine that the in the next release of miniperl, those who know more than I will have fixed it.

Meanwhile I have a fully functional system with one package compiled with -fno-stack-protection which may be fixed next time I upgrade without me having to alter anything!
