Newbie question about GUI

  • Quote

Post by rolandpishh » Sun Jun 26, 2005 2:25 am

Hi everyone,

sorry if this question is very simple,

I recently downloaded the gentoo universal installer,
I want it for installing in my old laptop (pentium MMX-133,
144MB RAM,10GB HDD).
Before I take the time to install it, I would like to know if
gentoo has some sort of GUI included in the installer disc.

Reading the install.txt file, I saw that there is a second disk
(which I don't have) with KDE, OpenOffice, etc., so I was
wondering if after I install gentoo with the only disc I have
there will be an X-Windows because I don't want to use it
in text mode.

Thanks in advance
Roland

If you have an internet connection you can emerge a light GUI such as fluxbox.

Guides here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/?catid=desktop (be sure to note the X server configuration guide)

Note that things will take a long time to compile on such an old machine. Be prepared to let emerges run overnight.

And fix your enter key. It is inserting line breaks in the middle of sentences, and that looks really crappy on high resolution displays.

I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is. -- http://bash.org/?5273

He probably thinks that you have to press enter at the end of each line in the edit box, when in reality, they just wrap around with n'arry a problem.
