Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

Supported PCI SATA RAID controllers?

  • Quote

Post by ziphnor » Mon Jun 20, 2005 6:32 pm

Im looking into buying a cheap PCI SATA RAID controller, and im wondering which ones are well supported on Gentoo in particular and linux in general.

Candidates are for example the SYBA SD-SATA150R, Q-Tec 350SA and ST Lab.

I thought i might as well check before buying, and avoid alot of hassle with missing drivers.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Thanks for helping out. I notice that the Syba(Sillicon Image 3112 chipset) is listed as supporting Linux on the newegg website, so i suppose it should be safe to go with that.

Only if you don't have a seagate drive. Some of these drives are black listed to reduce performance to stop data corruption.

Just remember that none of those cheap "RAID" controllers have real hardware RAID support. You must use them as normal SATA controllers and use software RAID.

I was thinking about buying this also. Did you buy it and get it working properly?

Controllers from 3ware are hardware raid controllers and are supported by the kernel.

I wish I could afford a hardware raid controller from 3ware. I'm just looking for a cheap solution that I can do software raid 5 or raid 1 so I don't lose my data. Reading the reviews on NewEgg, it sounds like this is a decent card and should work well with software raid in linux.
But I figured I would ask here, since I found this thread.
