Gentoo - 2.6.5 - on IBM Thinkpad 570

Hi everyone,

I'm new around these parts, this is also the first time I have installed Gentoo.

I have a question regarding my IBM Thinkpad 570 (2644-3AA) laptop.

I have successfully downloaded and installed Gentoo, on it, which included compiling Kernel 2.6.5. But I'm having the following problems:

1. PCMCIA
It wont register my PCMCIA / Cardbus ports. Most sites say to use the i82365 driver, which is what I have dont, but it still wont work. I have compiled the kernel a couple of times, with PCMCIA support built in, and with PCMCIA as modules, and I have also run emerge pcmcia-cs and rc-update add pcmcia default after each time that I compiled a new kernel.

I have edited the module autoload file, when the system boots, it says i82365 module failed to load.

Then when it starts PCMCIA it does the following:
* PCMCIA Support Detected
* Starting PCMCIA...
cardmgr[2927]: no sockets found!
* cardmgr failed to start. Make sure that you have PCMCIA
* modules built or support compiled into the kernel [!!]
lsmod doesnt list any PCMCIA drivers.

2. Framebuffer
I noticed that now that I have my freshly compiled kernel, that GRUB doesnt have a background image, and the system doesnt have a slash screen when booting.

I enabled the framebuffer in the kernel, just wondering, do I need X installed before I see any of those fancy effects?

3. Trackpoint
This doesnt work, any ideas on how to configure it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

trackpoint problem

I have had a similar problem with my trackpoint since i upgraded to kernel 2.6. I have an IBM Thinkpad T23. It seems that some device probe order changed between 2.6.1 and 2.6.3 that results in the psmouse not working if the system is booted up (or brought out of suspend) with a usbmouse plugged in.

To fix it, I searched on the forums, and found http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php? ... trackpoint

Change the psmouse from being compiled into the kernel to being a module. Then add psmouse to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6. Voila!

Code: Select all

--> Input device support
<M> Mouse interface
[*] Provide legacy /dev/psaux device

[*] Mice
<M> PS/2 mouse

For kernel 2.6 you need yenta_socket

I'm in the process of installing this myself on a Thinkpad 570.

Also, add pcmcia_core and ds to /etc/modules.autoload/kernel-2.6

So far, the xircom/tulib network card doesn't work, need to figure out which module to load.

Keep you posted.

I think you want the xircom_cb module. Here's my lsmod (fresh gentoo install on a 570)

Code: Select all

Module                  Size  Used by
firmware_class         10784  0
video                  16228  0
xirc2ps_cs             19344  0
xircom_cb              12224  0
genrtc                  6028  0
yenta_socket           23496  3
rsrc_nonstatic         11232  1 yenta_socket
Also: Does anyone have any of the thinkpad extras working on a 570? I'd like to be able to remove the base without killing the OS.

Hi cartpullerjack,

In the mean time it is fixed, I have it compiled into my kernel now if I recall correctly. I see I have not been true to my word as I said "keep you posted". Sorry about that.

Thanks for the reply. If you want I can look up my kernel settings for it. Currently running gentoo-hardened-2.6.11-r9. As far as the extras go, I haven't tried those, but the modem does work. If you want to expand harddisk size, it goes up to at least 80Gb, that what I'm using. I did make sure I got a hitachy travelstar of the same series as the original 6Gb version.

Cheers,
Luud
