what about suspending laptops? any advance there?
atm i'm too busy (@work) to try myself, but i'd love to know if its worth a try!

8.14.13 seems to work, but I can't get direct rendering and there are no errors in my xorg log. This is just too weird. I recompiled my kernel to use the same gcc as the driver and currently I'm recompiling xorg-x11, maybe that will work.

I have this problem, too.

I have a Radeon Mobility 9000.
X.org-logs says that dri is enabled, but neither fgl_glxgears work or glxinfo gives direct rendering enabled.
Drivers, kernel, X.org, alsa .... everything was compiled with the same gcc. (Recompiled world yesterday)

Somehow the driver uses the wrong libGL (the libGL.so didn't change from 8.12.10).

dwerg, have you used emerge for installing ati-drivers? I do. Maybe I should install it manually.

Yes, I emerged it, installing it manually will probably give some problems with the location of the opengl libraries in the gentoo system.

My X850XT works without binary hack now. BTW, libGL works well after emerge.

I've done opengl-update ati several times.

Disable DRM in the kernel. fglrx won't compile if it's enabled.

Thanks. I noticed the bug before, but sometimes people don't even use bugzilla and may have found a solution. I will just go back to 8.12.10 until something has been found.

I finally made it by installing the driver manualy via ati-driver-installer-8.14.13.run from ati's-web.

I fixed my compile problems by compiling AGPGART into the kernel, and selecting VIA Chipset support as a module. DRM is disabled. It still gives some errors during compilation, but it works now.

I used the binary from ATi and haven't had a problem. There doesn't seem to be an increase in performance, but X no longer crashes when it gets restarted.

i got a thinkpad t42p with a firegl2. For a long time ago the ati-driver was working for me (but without acpi).
So its not really a solution to abandon acpi on a laptop.

Anyways, i got the same problem since month ago...
The DRM-Modul wont compile. The DRM support in my gentoo-(2.6.11-r9)sources is not activated.
Only agpcart ist build as a modul. The following (important) lines will show the problem:

Try compiling the AGP-support into the kernel, with the appropiate chipset as a module. It still gave me a couple of errors during compilation, but it worked.
