e17 backgrounds [solved]

  • Quote

Post by JoeG » Wed Jun 08, 2005 1:48 am

Hey all. I've gotten e17 up and running. Oddly enough, although I was expecting major problems, I just set the e dependencies for -* in /etc/portage/package.keywords (to use cvs versions), and emerged everything in the correct order. Null perspiration.

Man, am I loving this. Eye candy, and fast as hell. Just one teensy issue. Backgrounds. I cannot for the life of me get a background set. I have several .edj files in ~/.e/e/backgrounds. I've tried setting up using

Code: Select all

e17setroot -s ~/.e/e/backgrounds/just_e.edj
and no joy. I've run

Code: Select all

enlightenment_remote -default-bg-set ~/.e/e/backgrounds/just_e.edj
I've even tried running emblem to set the background. Trouble is, emblem doesn't even see any of the .edj files.

Am I doing something wrong here? I'm not complaining 'bout e17. It is cvs stuff, after all. But I'd really like to be able to change my backgrounds. BTW, I just epdated last night (again). I use a script that I found in another thread called e17-pkg. Many thanks to mazirian. That script really simplifies things.

Thanks in advance,

JoeG

This works for me:

Code: Select all

enlightenment_remote -bg-set /path/to/Background.edj
e17setroot is for pseudo transparency for things like aterm, gnome-terminal and etc, and it is run something like this, specifying a jpeg or png:

Code: Select all

e17setroot -scale /path/to/Background.jpeg

well...
emblem has been working fine for me. Maybe it's something about latest CVS build. Try updating.

okaaaay. Weird. e17setroot will now work on image files, and create the appropriate .edj file in my backgrounds folder, but will not set an .edj as my background. Emblem now sees the edj files in my backgrounds folder, but after it loads the thumbnails, I lose the arrows that allow me to scroll thru the images to pick one...although I can pick and choose thru the ones that are previewed at the bottom...

most intriguing. I s'pose I should chalk it up to cvs code. gonna update again and see what else changes . E17 rocks, tho. The devs have done one hell of a job.

e17setroot should set the backround as well as background for pseudo trans in Eterm
Esetroot sets background only for Eterm

I have the same issue with emblem window (about scroll). If you don't have too many backgrounds just resize the window... :)

you could also use Evidence for browsing and setting the bg.

just add an entry for e17setroot in evidence.menu ;)

Should it be necessary to have to use e17setroot (or esetroot) everytime you log in, in order to set the root background for psuedotransparency prurposes? I ended up putting an eapp in the startup folder that does this for me, but it seems odd that it would forget that setting.

well that's currently the only way to do that (.eapp with Esetroot command) in startup.
sooner or later e17 will support full transparency, so none of the devs bothers around with adding a "remember function" for Esetroot... eapp in startup is the way to go till then ;)

That did the trick. I'm seeing duplicate images, tho. I know I don't have that many in my bg folder. These are coming from the e17 shared folders, I assume. So, now this is working. Lesson learned: When using cvs code, prepare for bugs and constant updating. :D Very pleased with e17 so far.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm marking this one [solved].

@Peka: Just noticed your post in the e forums elsewhere about something called etermrefresh. You ever get that to work. I'm not clear about what it does or if its even helpful. Without any source code to see what it was doing I wasn't going to play with it.
