This is old news to some, but for those who haven't seen it, you have to check out the video of Killzone for the PS3.

Good God! Amazing!

Hate to break it to you guys, but that's not gameplay footage you're looking at. It's a prerendered sequence designed to show distributors what they hope the finished game will be like. The PS3 hardware at the show (as well as the development kits sent out to developers) aren't powerful enough to handle what you saw there as the hardware itself is still in alpha and Sony stated that the hardware at the show was only running on about a quarter of the power of the final PS3 specs.

Did you actually play the first Killzone? The pre-release footage for that also looked great, but it turned out to be not that great looking, and had shocking gameplay.

I assume we're getting a Linux client for it, but do you know if Unreal II is getting one?

Errm, you mean Unreal 3? The engine with the same name of the game will also be used in Americas army, I think.

UnrealEngine3:
Work is still progressing on this, but there really isn't anything
terribly interesting to report right now.

Cell processing is no laughing matter. As it stands, the PS3 could be more powerful than any PC for a long while.

It's hard to figure out where it stands. Most of what I see about it are guesses based on rumors (not really about the technology, but specifically about what the PS3 will do).

However, I did find some interesting reading on the subject which some who are unfamiliar with the technology and it's claims might want to check out. Here's the link. There are several good links on that page as well.
* Clock speed over 4GHz.
* 100 GBytes per second aggregate Memory & I/O speed:
* - Dual XDR controller gives 25.6 GBytes per second.
* - Dual configurable interfaces give 76.8 GBytes per second.
* - Memory currently limited to 256 MB per Cell (this applies to direct connections only, additional memory can be accessed via I/O) .
* 8 X "SPEs", 128 bit vector engines, 128 registers each.
* 2 instructions issued per cycle per SPE.
* Peak = 256 GigaFlops
* Double precision maths operations supported.
* 256KBytes "Local Store" per SPE.
* Internal communication is via 4 X 128 bit rings, up to 96 Bytes per cycle.
* PPE can handle 2 threads (update: NOT POWER5 based).
* PPE includes VMX.
* PPE includes 512 KBytes Cache.
* "Dynamic Power Management" technology.
* Ten heat sensors
* 221 square mm in 90nm (prototype)
* 234 million transistors (prototype)
* 90nm SOI, Low K, 8 layers of metal & Copper interconnect.
* IBM start manufacturing within 6 months, Sony to start later in the year.

Multiple simultaneous operating systems including Linux.
Cell Will Demolish The PC On The First Day
One point that has been made to me is that claiming the Cell will demolish the PC on the first day is inviting criticism.

This claim is based on the fact that the similar technology in GPUs is already demolishing general purpose CPUs by hundreds of percent margins. This is not in theory, this is happening in real life applications today. GPUs are used in a variety of ways to accelerate different research applications, they can be used for a lot more than graphics.

The above claim may seem shocking to many PC users but if you are aware of what GPUs are capable of you'll not find it surprising at all. Your graphics chip can already outgun your CPU by a massive margin. You could consider Cell a more general purpose version of the same technology.
Cell Equivalent To 5 Dual Opterons
Slashdot liked the article so much they posted it twice, unfortunately first time they used the dodgiest quote in the article...
This comparison is based on the Cell reaching it's theoretical maximum computing power. We will not know IF this is possible until the chip becomes available and even then it will need a "perfect" application which can use all the APUs at full power simultaneously.
