I had the same problem with an intel8x0 (nforce2) re-emerging alsa-oss, alsa-lib, alsa-utils, alsa-tools, alsa-headers helped me. Thanks for all suggestions.

Okay, this one should probably go on an ALSA FAQ somewhere...I fixed my problem by muting the "Headphone Jack Sense" and "Line Jack Sense" controls. (Based on a suggestion at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/sh ... ?id=144742)

If you are have a problem with no sound output on a Thinkpad or other system using the snd_intel8x0 ALSA module, try the following:

Code:

amixer sset "Headphone Jack Sense" mute
amixer sset "Line Jack Sense" mute

The use of "mute/unmute" to refer to the state of these controls is, to put it kindly, bleeding stupid. "On/Off" would be much saner, and might induce people to try diddling with them when things aren't working.
Thanks pls this solved my problem.[/quote]

I read this thread with interest, as I just upgraded kernels to 2.6.11-r6 and it killed my sound in an Intel8x0 box. The solutions above didn't fix things, but finally I noticed something mjcwotx mentioned, about needing to press 'M' on controls in alsamixer to toggle them on and off. So I started walking through my controls, toggling each on and off while alsaplayer was playing a long wav file. Suddenly when I turned the one labeled: IEC958 sound came through.

I have no idea what that one is, but it works for me. FYI.

Frustration level now abating....
I had this same problem and was tearing my hair out. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the answer. I think this can be voted the worlds most annoying bug/problem.

you can find more about iec958 here..
http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/faq/glossaries/glossarie/
the command 'iecset' (in alsa-utils) will show/change current rate, useful if you have 'tinny' digital sound

You saved my day!
After a recent new install (hd crashed on my 2003 gentoo T40p and I had to compile a new system :-() I spend a long day trying to fgure out, why I got no sound.
Your solution just solved everything immediately!
Now I have to work on the ACPI and the thinkpad buttons, but the sound was a major one!

I'm having the same problem, only pls's tip of muting the jack sensor channels had no effect. I'm having similiar experiences as others: i.e. alsa starts fine, modules are loaded, I'm in audio group, relevant channels are unmuted and turned up... When I use aplay to play a wav, it appears to play, but no sound comes from speakers or headphones on my Thinkpad T42. I had it working before with gentoo sources 2.6.11-r11, then alsa suddenly stopped outputting sound. I tar'd up my install, installed linux to test the audio, and surely it worked; untar'd the Gentoo install and ALSA worked for a few hours, then it stopped again. I'm getting very annoyed with this. I have re-emerged alsa packages and restarted alsasound countless times. I might go back to a 2.4 kernel if I can't resolve this -- yeah right, but it's pissing me off.

Not the same problem I'm having. My levels are all normal. In fact, EVERYTHING appears normal with alsa (modules loaded, no errors in dmesg, syslogs, startup, etc.) but no sound comes from speakers nor headphones.

OK, I found out the culprit of my problem: ibm_acpi. ACPI was muting my volume for some reason. I just got this Thinkpad a few days ago, so I'm still configuring things. When I was going through /proc/acpi/ibm, I noticed this:

Code: Select all

 # cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume
level: 14
mute: on
commands: up, down, mute
commands: level <level> (<level> is 0-15)
so I tried 'echo down > /proc/acpi/ibm/volume' and sure enough, sound comes from the speakers again:

Code: Select all

level: 13
mute: off
commands: up, down, mute
commands: level <level> (<level> is 0-15)
Once I set up the volume up/down/mute buttons, this shouldn't be such a big deal. Anyways, glad sound works and I know how to fix it if it happens again. HTH others too.

EDIT: hmmm..... volume up/down/mute buttons seem to work out-of-the-box, but I can't unmute the card as normal user. I have to unmute as root until I hit the mute button as normal user.
