Problem with lirc and irw [solved]

I am trying to make lirc working with my Medion X10 usb remote. I took this for help: http://www.vdr-wiki.de/wiki/index.php/M ... g_mit_LIRC (German)

The kernel modules lirc_atiusb and lirc_dev were loaded successfully although I could not find the options "input core support" and „event interface support“ in the kernel configuration. When I tried to run /usr/sbin/lircd for the first time I got this message
can't open or create /var/run/lircd.pid
Permission denied
This is why I ran lircd as root.

The tutorial says that you can test lirc with irw but on executing irw lircd seems to crash because it immediately disappears from the list of processes.

Everything in /usr/sbin and /sbin are only supposed to be run as root. I just tried running /usr/sbin/lircd as user as you did and got the exact same error.

I believe the proper way to start lircd is (as root)

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/lircd start
At least it works for me.

Also, if you want it to start automatically upon boot,

Code: Select all

rc-update add lircd default
"You have to invite me in"

Yeah, thanks a lot. Starting lirc the way you said works.
