2.6.12-rc4-nitro1 "Frozen Hell"

READ THIS FIRST
Nitro-sources is an experimental kernel patchset which is NOT supported by the Gentoo devs. If you have problems with something, see if the problem persists with a kernel supported by Gentoo. If you still have the same problem with a kernel supported by Gentoo (like vanilla-sources), then file a bug report at h**p://bugs.gentoo.org . If you only had the problem with 2.6.12-rc4-nitro1, and not with a vanilla kernel, then bug us in this thread.

hmm, not much to say, this kernel is awesome, although its an experimental release
it should play nice, great interactivity.

Guys, use the boot parameter for now please (which is in the mainline).
I lost my all patch files by accident while migrating to gentoo, so i only relied on what i found on
the net + in brokenouts of other patchsets, sorry alot,
nevertheless, please post your requests, next release for rc4 is also planned :P

What's new in rc4 compared to rc3? or even to 2.6.11? don't see the point in mindlessly upgrading stuff when you don't even know what you're getting...

The point is to test new developments and help find bugs.

The current 2.6.11 is called stable for a reason... back when .10 was stable, people were testing .11-rc's in this same fashion :)

Anyone else have problems with gensplash? I couldn't get the framebuffer to display at all until I emerged the masked version 1.1.9.5 of splashutils, which still isn't working quite right.

Has anyone got ndiswrapper to work with this kernel? I have tried 1.1 (portage) and the latest cvs without sucess?

Failes with error about kthread_run needing 5 args but only getting 3.

Will post full message when able.

Thanks.

EDIT here is the error.

Problem found (maybe only for me). I can't shutdown my box. I used exactly the same config as in the RC2 release and with that I never had this problem (last tried some minutes ago) but now I can't shutdown. Normally I shutdown with GDM but "halt" and "shutdown -h now" doesn't work either. No error messages, it just reboots instead of shutdown.
I am /root and if you see me laughing you better have a backup.

I have Problems with the vmware modules and my sound works only with nasty interuptions, e.g. when I change console/X.

But all in all it seems to be a good release, althoug I'm back to 2.6.11-nitro2.

Same point for which you use CVS version of KDE...

T
KDE has a weekly CVS (er, SVN) digest that lists all the cool stuff that has happened since the previous week, the developers' blogs on planetkde.org, plus I hang around on IRC, so I have a good general idea of what's developing. With the kernel it's just "rc4/2.6.12/whatever is now out!", and I have no idea wtf has changed vs the previous version.
The point is to test new developments and help find bugs.
Well, true. Perhaps I should have phrased the question, as what's new and interesting from an end user's perspective...

All I'm asking is, is there anywhere I can read the condensed version of what's happening in kernel-land, in a form comprehendable to people other than kernel developers? If there's not, that's fine too, and I guess I'll just have to live with upgrading every major version, and not knowing why exactly it's better than the previous one...

Its ussually bug fixes, new drivers, or improved hardware support, and most importantly the most recent security updates, although its nothing that will make you see your life in a whole new perspective. Many times kernel updates will only affect small amounts of people who have certian hardware/software combinations. For instance one release could have a fix for an xfs bug, if you never use xfs it wouldn´t affect you, one kernel thats stable on one machine could be a major problem on another. The reason we must test these is simply that changes to anything could break other stuff, it is up to the testers to discover these issues.

With this kernel version I experienced a slower cosole interaction. So is it still impossible for nvidia card users to use the riva framebuffer? Becuase I'm using vesafb-tng.
