Has anyone using this encoutered any problems with receiveing files from regular AIM user's? The previous cvs version would pop-up and accept dialog but then not have any kind of transfer dialog. This one seems to have an interesting file transfer ability but I never receive the notification that someone is trying to send me a file, even when I know they are doing that. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this or whether its a problem with my own seetings

thnx

Oscar isnt an open protocol and as such file transfers have always been extremely iffy. Its just not worth anyones time to figure out how aol does it since they have a tendency to change it on a regular basis to kick other clients off the network. I have had working file transfers twice in my live. I would recommend either using the jabber protocol or setting up your own ftp server

I think that comments like those are completely useless and have nothing to do with the topic. In fact they show that you assume that you better then me about what my options and circumstances are. Open protocols are great and all but if they don't fit my needs they are 100% useless to me. End of story. Jabber is great system which I really do like but if I wanted/could use it for I need I would not be making this post in the first place. An ftp server might be a good idea for some but for others it adds uneccesarry security, firewall, server and other concerns, not mentioning that you have no idea of what the policy of running ftp servers is at the place where I want to transfer files. If you really want to be helpfull then either stay on the topic of the post or suggest a file transfer utility that has all characteristics of aim file transfers, which I'm sure you're familiar with since I'm sure that you suggested replacements only after understanding my unique needs and concerns and didn't just randomly post your own personal views. Then I would really be thankfull.

David_Escott's topic was completely on topic ... and your response to it was unduly harsh. As stated, using Gaim, file transfer has been consistently broken in the past, is likely to be broken now (it is on my system using a CVS vesion pulled out a couple days ago), and due to the closed nature of the protocol and the fact that AOL change it simply to block other AIM programs out, it is likely to break again in the future: It just isn't a stable or reliable solution.

Gaim v0.59.9 has just been released and is the first packaged release of Gaim using Gtk+2. You may have better luck with that. I don't know what else to suggest, but who am I to "understand your unique needs and concerns anyway?"

The reason it was so harsh was because I posted only to get an answer to a simple question. All I wanted to know was whether I'm not doing something right in gaim's configuration or whether the problem lies with gaim itself and not my lack of knowledge. In fact you have provided the answer in your post. I do not need other people telling me what I would be better off with, without knowing what I need in the first place. If you don't know the answer to the question then just ignore the thread. Thanks for the answer.

UPDATE: Emerged gaim-cvs-r3 on Mar. 2 and file transfers are working and have a really nice new dialog. If you're behind a firewall, make sure port 5190 is open

Can I initiate a file transfer in GAIM? If so, how?

In the latest version of Gaim-cvs, you can right-click on a name in the buddy list and click 'send file'

I wouldn't recommend anyone upgrade to the newest gaim-cvs. Sean Egan just checked in a new buddy list that is far from complete. I would wait a week before checking out gaim.

Here is the message from Sean's commit for anyone who missed it:
This is a new buddy list.

Lots of things about it just Don't Work. I probably already know about those
things, and you'd just be wasting my time in submitting a bug report about it.

I decided that instead of getting it to all work perfectly before committing,
that I'd get it in cvs, and slowly fix it with regular commits. That way, it's
easier to keep track of things, and other developers can help. Plus, I'm getting
pissed off at the buddy list and want it to die. It's kinda boring, and doing nothing
but the buddy list for such a long time has just gotten me very bitter.

After 0.60 is released later this week, Gaim will resume being fun. This week is
going to be very stressful, though, I'm sure.

Things you ought to know about this buddy list:
- It crashes
- It leaks
- There's no way to edit the buddy list, or access offline buddies
- Most of the menus and buttons and whatnot just plain ol' don't work.
- Status icons are only implemented for AIM.

That's mostly just because I'm lazy. As such, you may want to be wary of updating this.
If you do decide to update this, you may want to learn "cvs update -D yesterday" as well :)

All the art there is just placeholder art.

You probably won't really have as many problems as it sounds like you will from reading this.
This message is extra-negative to stress that I don't want to be bothered with complaints about
something not working about it :). I'll repeat: If something doesn't work, I probably already
know about it.

If you want to actually help with something, I'd be delighted to have it. IM me.

-s.
Be warned...

god dammit, just reemerged the latest cvs (before reading this) and am now left with a semi-functional buddy list :x and to boot the sys-tray icon plugin has completely disapeared! don't suppose there's any way to get a functional version back again? I suppose I could go back to 0.59x version again but I like the gtk2 interface dammit.

will v0.60 have the new or old buddy list?

I think it will have the new buddy list.

If you want to go back to yesterdays CVS to get the old buddy list back, here is what I did:

1. As root, go into /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src/gaim-cvs/gaim/
2. Type " cvs -d ':pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/gaim' login"
3. type "cvs update -D yesterday". replace yesterday with 2_days_ago if you want to go back two days.
4. edit the gaim-cvs ebuild you are using (in /usr/portage/net-im/gaim-cvs) and comment out this line:

Code: Select all

ECVS_SERVER="cvs.gaim.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/gaim"
5. emerge gaim-cvs
6. emerge rsync to get the unedited ebuild back and don't re-emerge gaim-cvs until it is stable.

I hope this helps. If you have problems post them here.

the new buddy list isnt as bad as he says, he just doesnt want a million bug reports. Its a hell of a lot bigger though, and supposedly its going to get smaller. heres a screenshot:Image

its now using real gtk2 instead of gtk1 compatability stuff.

though dont get me wrong, its still pretty damn buggy, getting memory leaks and segfaults. I'tll be nice when its done

although a bit incomplete the new buddy list does seem reasonably useable. The systray applet on the other hand I've come to use a lot, does anyone know why this was removed? is it closely linked to the buddy list code?

I emerged gaim-cvs onto a fresh gentoo install last night and the buddy list crashes everytime I login. Might have to look at rolling back a few days as above. This sort of this can be a bit of a pain when you just want things to work - one of the drawbacks of running gentoo I guess - I've learnt not to play with glibc now after breaking my system twice (using accept ~x86 and trying to use winex... with glibc 3.2.2).
