iTunes Music on Linux without unmasking

Does anyone know an efficient way of getting music I purchased in iTunes on my Powerbook to play on my Gentoo desktop? All of the solutions I've been able to find involve emerging software that is still masked and I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

AFAIK files from iTunes Music Store are encrypted, so I don't think there's much choice. I don't know what type of file your exactly playing, but I remember I saw a How To in this forum that didn't involve unmasking anything. If you want my opinion, I would say that unmasking a package is not the worst thing in the world. Remember that the computer is your slave and not the other way around.

But unfortunately you may become it's slave if things go wrong... but yeah, unmasking a package isn't that much of a big deal. :)

iTunes Music Store files have DRM on them that prevents them from being read by "unauthorized" programs. There's no such thing as an "authorized" program for Linux, unfortunately.

However, since you have a powerbook running OSX, there's still hope. You can use jHymn ( http://hymn-project.org/ ) to strip the DRM from the file without any loss in quality. I used it on my laptop running Windows, and my iTMS songs play just fine on my Gentoo desktop. Give this a try.

I don't know of any Linux software that will unencrypt these files, but jHymn would work perfectly for what you need. Just make sure to make a backup copy of your music first...

That program is written in Java and you can download the source code, it should work in linux shouldn't it?

I don't know about Wine, but iTunes runs under Crossovers Office's version.
