utemper / ebuild.sh line 59 / cpio [solved]

doing a fresh install of gentoo (emerge --sync) (emerge --emptytree system). i get the following error: (package 67 of 103)

unpacking utemper...rpm
/usr.../ebuild.sh line 59: cpio command not found

???
1) what is utemper
2) what can i do

1. you can try emerging cpio first
2. if that doesn't work, try skipping utemper with emerge --skipfirst --resume

I've recently had the same problem.

Given that it goes wrong during

emerge --emptytree system

is it ok to start things back up again using just

emerge system

or will this cause problems?
